Duda Jr., Pepin Lead Warriors to 92-60 Thumping of Pitt-Johnstown

EAST STROUDSBURG – Paced by a career-performance beyond the arc from David Duda Jr. and a double-double from 2021-2022 PSAC East Athlete of the Year Carlos Pepin, the East Stroudsburg University men's basketball team picked up its sixth consecutive win to start the season with a 92-60 win over Pitt-Johnstown on Saturday night inside Koehler Fieldhouse.

The Warriors (6-0, 2-0 PSAC) remain perfect through the first stretch of conference play. The Mountain Cats (5-3, 1-1 PSAC) suffer their first league loss against the Warriors.

Notables

  • Duda Jr. surpassed his previous career-high of 19 points, which he set against Mansfield last season. The native of Collegeville was nearly unconscious from 3-point land, sinking 6-of-8 attempts from beyond the arc. Overall, he made 7-of-9 attempts during his 18 minutes on the court.

  • UPJ was only able to shoot 37.7% from the field (23-61), as ESU has now held each of its past three opponents under 40 percent. In four home games this season, the Warriors have held the opposition to shoot just 19.8% from beyond the arc (17-of-86), countering with a mark of 34.4% (32-96).
  • ESU led in most categories including rebounds (40-37), assists (20-11), steals (17-6) and points in the paint (50-26).
  • The Mountain Cats posted a 21-9 record last season. ESU held NABC All-American selection John Paul Kromka to a season-low three points.

How it Happened

  • UPJ scored the first points, with a layup from Kromka. With the score tied at 10-10, the Warriors ripped off a game-altering 14-0 scoring run to take a 24-10 lead in just three minutes of game-time. ESU made all five of its field goal attempts, and held UPJ to an 0-5 mark from the floor.
  • After a layup ended the scoring spree, ESU built its advantage up to 17 points at 29-12. The Mountain Cats sliced the deficit to as low as 11 at 33-22 but closed the first half strong with an 11-1 scoring run, taking a 44-23 lead into the intermission.
