Warriors Win Five Events, Makar Eclipses Shot Put School Record at DeSchriver Invitational

EAST STROUDSBURG – For the third consecutive week, freshman Elizabeth Makar eclipsed the program record in the shot put and the East Stroudsburg University women's track and field team won five events at the 22nd Annual DeSchriver Invitational on Saturday at Koehler Fieldhouse.

On her way to winning the shot put, Makar once again shattered her own school record in the event with a throw of 14.55 on her final attempt of the day. The Oxford, Pa. native continues to lead the PSAC and ranks 12th in DII.

Makar also broke the freshman record in the weight throw with a toss of 15.35m (50-4 ½), which is also the fourth best throw in program history.

Jeanette Jones recorded her second PSAC qualifying time of the season, this time in the 400m after finishing in 59.45 and Zionette Salahuddin notched a conference mark in the weight throw at 14.37m.

Winning events for the Warriors were Makar (weight throw/shot put), Jones (400m), Kayma Edmonds (triple jump) and the 4x200m relay team.

Running Highlights

On her way to winning the 400m, Jones clocked a personal-best time and the ninth quickest finish in program history. Ariel Kyle was sixth with a season-best time of 1:02.16. Kyle returned to the track later in the day to take third place in the 200m (27.16).

Running in the 5000m for the first time this season, Alycia Smith finished sixth after clocking a time of 21:02.56.

Jacklyn Spaccaforno competed in the 55m hurdles for the first time in her career and earned a fourth place finish with a time of 9.10.

In the 55m, Jalen Rhodes led ESU in third (7.58) while Jones (5th-7.63), Sierra DiCupe (6th-7.66) and Kayla Horning (7th-7.68) followed.

Clocking a personal-best time of 5:43.88 in the mile, Kaylene Raczka earned a sixth place finish for her effort.

In the other distance events, Carolina Kaczmarek took fourth in the 600m with a personal-best time of 1:48.36 and Sarah Guthrie was sixth in the 800m with a time of 2:28.40.

With ESU featuring two squads in the 4x200m relay, the Warriors claimed the top-two spots with Foston, Horning, Duverger and DiCupe in first with a time of 1:48.54, while Kyle, Rhodes, Edmonds and Spaccaforno were the runners-up at 1:49.97.

Field Event Highlights

The Warriors dominated the weight throw by having four of the top five finishers which included Makar (15.35m) in first place, Madison Horahan (14.88m) as the runner-up, Isabella Marte in third with a personal-best throw of 14.86m and Zionette Salahuddin in fifth with a personal-best toss of 14.37m. Horahan's personal-best throw is the seventh-best mark in program history.

Makar returned to the throws area for arguably her best event, the shot put, which she won for the second straight week with a throw of 14.55m on her last attempt. Horahan earned a top-five finish in fifth with a toss of 12.11m.

Edmonds had herself a day in the sand pit as she took first in the triple jump with a personal-best leap of 10.87m and runner-up in the long jump with a mark of 5.23m.

On her way to a third place finish in the pole vault, Nickolina Annelli was a quarter of an inch shy of tying the school record as she cleared the bar at 3.60m on her final attempt. Juliana Schraer and Hannah Frankenfield were tied for fifth with a mark of 3.15m.
