Makar Earns Second Team All-America Honors in Shot Put at NCAA Indoor Championships

PITTSBURG, Kan. – East Stroudsburg University freshman Elizabeth Makar capped off a memorable indoor season for the Warriors with second team All-America recognition in the shot put at the 2022 NCAA Indoor Track & Field Championships.

On her way to a ninth place finish in the event, Makar unleashed a throw of 14.44m (47-4 ½) on her second attempt.

"I am extremely proud of Elizabeth's performance this weekend.", said first-year Head Coach Cortney Stafford. "She went in 16th and finished 9th. This competition allowed her to see that she belongs in the mix."

"There were only two freshman who made finals. The rest of the field was seniors. That tells you she will be has lots of opportunity to grow and be a force on the national stage."

"I was very impressed with Elizabeth's completive maturity in a high pressure finals.", said assistant coach Jim Morrison. "The competitive fire is impressive!"

"This experience was one for the books! Being at a National meet as an athletic freshman was surreal.", said Makar. "The competition was great, as it forced me to rise to the occasion. Going in seeded 16th, to then make finals, and place 9th is an accomplishment that I am proud of. I am not done yet, and the best is yet to come! "

Makar became the 17th All-American in ESU women's track and field program history on Saturday and the first since Aspen Gaita accomplished the feat in the pentathlon back in 2018.

The Oxford, Pa. native is the first thrower in school history to achieve All-American status after entering the championships with the 16th-best mark.

Makar wraps up the season which saw her set the school record in the shot put, the fourth best-mark in the weight throw and the freshmen records in both events. She was additionally the runner-up in the shot put at the conference championships and a two-time PSAC Field Athlete of the Week.

The Warriors will now turn their attention to the outdoor portion of their schedule with their first event coming on Saturday, March 26 at the WCU Quad.
