Warriors, Spencer Shatter Records in ESU’s Road Sweep at Queens

ESU set program records in consecutive wins (12), consecutive shutouts (4) and Ashley Spencer became ESU’s all-time RBI’s leader

FLUSHING, N.Y. -- It was a day for the record books for the East Stroudsburg University softball team, as the Warriors picked up their program-record 13th consecutive win on the road in a sweep of Queens on Sunday afternoon. ESU defeated Queens 6-0 in game one and earned the sweep with an 8-3 victory in game two.

Along with the program-record winning streak, the Warriors (17-1) also set records for consecutive shutouts (4) while Ashley Spencer became the Warriors' all-time RBI leader with an RBI single in the first inning in game two. The Knights fall to 0-6 in 2022.

Spencer paced the ESU offense with four RBIs on the day and now has 95 career RBIs. After a single in the first inning of game two, she provided a three-run home run in the third inning.

Notables

  • The balanced offense featured 23 hits on the day, with Brooke McKeown going 6-8 on the day with a double, home run and three RBIs. Lexi Wright went 4-5, with a pair of doubles. Rachel Seiverd (two-run home run) and Molly Nies each provided two RBIs, while Reilly Vicendese went 4-8 with a solo home run, wit three runs scored.
  • The Warrior pitching staff was excellent once again, tossing its fourth consecutive shutout in game one. Katie Zaun (W, 5-1) threw her second consecutive shutout, striking out 11 batters while allowing just four hits and held the Knights to a .167 batting average. In her last three starts, the Allentown native has combined for 27 strikeouts in 19 innings, allowing just 10 hits, three walks and zero runs. Paige Zigmund (6-0) picked up the win in game two after giving up five hits, and three earned runs in four innings. Leigh Ann Jenkins pitched the final four innings of game two, allowing just one hit in that span.
  • ESU's 13-game winning streak snaps the 1976 record of 11 games. The 1976 team defeated Ithaca (2x), Trenton State, Hofstra, Temple, Springfield, West Chester, Glassboro State, West Chester, Montclair State and South Carolina, before falling Arizona State at the EAIAW National Championships. The 1976 squad finished 17-4, falling to Missouri in its final game. In its current 13-game winning streak, ESU has defeated Lake Erie, Mary, Wheeling, Chestnut Hill, Upper Iowa, Walsh, AIC, Notre Dame College, Nyack, Holy Family (2x) and Queens (2x) by a combined score of 92-23 to date.
  • Spencer is now the all-time Warrior RBIs leader, picking up her 95th run batted in of her collegiate career after the RBI single and three-run home run in game two. She breaks ESU Hall of Famer's Jen Veronesi '07 record of 91 career RBIs. Veronesi led the Warriors to a school-record 29 wins in 2007, a mark the Warriors matched a season ago. Veronesi established the RBI record of 91 in 187 games and 597 at bats, while it took Spencer 144 games and just 396 at bats.
  • ESU also set a new shutout streak with an 8-0 shutout against Nyack, a 7-0 and 5-0 blanking of Holy Family and Sunday's game one 6-0 victory over Queens. ESU posted 26 consecutive innings of scoreless pitching, before surrendering a two-run first inning against the Knights in game two. The Warriors previously posted three consecutive shutouts in 2007, 1991, 1985 and 1983.

How it Happened - Game One

  • The Warriors provided instant offense, with a leadoff home run off the bat of McKeown in the top of the 1st for ESU's first of a season-best four home runs in the doubleheader. Vicendese followed with a one-out single, advancing to third base with a pair of steals. Cecchin wrapped up the scoring in the first inning of the day with an RBI single. The Italy native would advance to third after a stolen base and passed ball, but would be stranded.
  • A McKeown RBI double added an additional run to the Warrior lead in the second inning, which scored Wright. Zaun continued her dominance in the circle throughout the first game.
  • McKeown's fourth RBI came next, with an RBI single in the top of the 4th. The Havertown native continued her impressive start to her freshman season as she leads ESU with a .424 batting average and ranks second with 19 RBIs behind Spencer's 22.
  • Nies capped the scoring in game one with a two-out two RBI single to left field which scored Wright and Kaitlin Caleen.
  • Queens threatened to score with a single and an ESU error in the bottom of the 7th, but Zaun struckout three batters to preserve her third consecutive shutout and secure ESU's record-breaking 12th consecutive victory.

How it Happened - Game Two

  • The Warriors once again began the contest strong with a three-spot in the top of the 1st. Vicendese opened the scoring in game two with a solo shot to left field for her first home run of the season. Spencer broke the ESU program-record for RBIs next in the inning, sending a single to right field to score Cecchin. Denva Shaw-Tait followed Spencer with a single to left center, as Spencer crossed the plate to give the Warriors a 3-0 lead.
  • Queens snapped the 26-innign shutout streak for the Warriors in their first at bats, with a two-RBI single with one-out, as QU cut the lead to 3-2.
  • After a scoreless second inning, ESU took control of the contest in the top of the 3rd. ESU smacked five hits and scored five runs, with Spencer's three-run home run highlighting the inning with no outs. After a pitching change and a Shaw-Tait walk, Seiverd blasted a home run to left field, as the Warriors led 8-2 after two-and-a-half innings.
  • Queens scored its third and final run of the game on a wild pitch in the bottom half of the third inning.
  • The game went scoreless the final four innings, with Jenkins shutting down the Knights.
