Softball Extends Winning-Streak to 15 Games in Dominant Sweep of Jefferson

The Warriors outscored the Rams, 15-1.

STROUDSBURG – Playing at Creekview Park for the first time in 27 days, the East Stroudsburg University softball team extended its program-record winning streak to 15 games after sweeping Jefferson (8-1, 7-0) on Tuesday afternoon at Vigon International Field.

The Warriors (19-1) outscored the Rams (1-5) 15-1 on the day, allowing just a solo home run in game one.

Paige Zigmund (W, 7-0) remained perfect in the circle with a win in game one, tossing four innings and allowed just three hits. Freshman Katie Zaun picked up a save in game one by pitching the final three innings and combined with redshirt junior Leigh Ann Jenkins (W, 4-1) picked up wins, and combined to throw a one-hitter against the Rams in a 7-0 game two victory.

Notables

  • The Warriors outhit Jefferson, 20-5, and were led by reigning PSAC East Athlete of the Week Brooke McKeown (4-7), who posted four singles and an RBI.
  • Denva Shaw-Tait led ESU with four RBIs, blasting a three-run home run in game one.  
  • Molly Nies provided three RBIs. Ashley Spencer posted a pair of doubles and a single and along with two runs batted in.
  • Rachel Seiverd, Kate Donahue and Reilly Vicendese all collected an RBI for ESU.
  • Sofia Cecchin smacked three hits, as ESU hit .351 on the day.
  • The Warrior pitching staff held Jefferson to a combined batting average of .116, with Zaun and Jenkins allowing just two hits in 10 innings of work combined.
  • ESU's 15-game winning streak currently ranks third in NCAA Division II, behind only  Concodia Irvine (27) and Colorado Mesa (21).

How it Happened – Game One

  • After a scoreless first three innings, Jefferson grabbed a 1-0 lead in the top of the fourth as Winnai Hoytt homered to left center field with one out.
  • It didn't take long for Warriors to answer as Shaw-Tait delivered a three-run blast that bounced off the top of the left field fence to put ESU ahead 3-1. With one out, Reilly Vicendese and Sofia Cecchin each singled to set up the RBI chance for Shaw-Tait.
  • ESU posted a crooked number in bottom of the fifth inning as five hits and three errors by the Rams produced five runs to push the Warriors' advantage to 8-1. Brooke McKeown came around to score after a leadoff single and with runners on first and second, Spencer laced a double to left center to make the score 6-1. Shaw-Tait followed with an RBI- single and Seaver plated another ESU run on double down the left field line.
  • Pitching the final three innings, Zaun continued her dominance in the circle to earn the save, throwing 3.0 scoreless innings, allowing one hit while striking out a trio.

How it Happened – Game Two

  • The Warriors opened the scoring in the bottom of the third. With one out, McKeown singled and Nies walked before the duo moved up 90 feet on a passed ball. Vicendese followed with a sacrifice fly to left center to put ESU ahead.
  • ESU put together a two-out rally in the bottom of the fourth inning as four runs on two hits pushed their advantage to 5-0. With the bases loaded, McKeown worked an eight-pitch walk to push across a run before Nies delivered a bases clearing triple to cap off the scoring.
  • Following an error by Jefferson, the Warriors added an additional run on the RBI single from Donaghue to make the score 6-0 in the bottom of the fifth inning.
  • In the process of recording her first career hit, Madison Chapman added an insurance run in the home half of the sixth as a single plated McKeown to make the score 7-0 in favor of ESU.
