KISSIMMEE, Fla. -- In its first game-action at The Spring Games, the East Stroudsburg University softball team could not comeback from a pair of four-run innings from Northwood, falling for the first time this season by a score of 10-3 on Sunday evening.
The Warriors fall to 4-1 in 2022, while the Timberwolves improve to 6-3 on the season with the win.
The ESU - Bemidji State contest scheduled for 6:00 p.m. on Sunday was canceled.
Notables
- Brooke McKeown continued her tear to start her ESU career, smashing the Warriors first home run of the season to open the contest. McKeown went 3-4 from the plate and scored two of ESU's three runs. The Havertown native leads the Warriors with a .526 batting average this season and six RBIs, reaching base safely in four of her first five collegiate contests.
- Molly Nies (sacrifice fly) and Ashley Spencer (1-4) also recorded RBIs for ESU.
- Denva Shaw-Tait added a pair of hits, going 2-4 on the day against Northwood.
- Reilly Vicendese, Sofia Cecchin, and Lexi Wright also collected hits.
- In the circle, Paige Zigmund (2.2 IP, 5 ER), Katie Zaun (L, 2.2 IP, 5 ER) and Mickayla Grow (0.2 IP) combined to throw four strikeouts against the Timberwolves.
How it Happened
- McKeown led off the contest with instant offense, smacking her first collegiate homerun and ESU's first four-bagger of the season.
- Sofa Cecchin began the top of the 2nd with a double to left center, as Spencer immediately followed with a single up the middle to score the Italy native. The Warriors led 2-0 after their first two innings at the plate.
- In the home half of the second frame, Northwood got a run back on an RBI single, cutting the Warrior lead in half.
- For the third consecutive inning, ESU plated a run in the top of the 3rd. After the speedy McKeown advanced to third base after a bunt single and throwing error. Nies followed up with a sacrifice fly to center to score McKeown to extend the Warrior lead to 3-1.
- Northwood opened the home half of the third inning with a solo home run, once again cutting the lead to a single run at 3-2.
- Three consecutive one-out singles followed by a double scored a pair of Timberwolves, as Northwood added another pair of runs in the bottom of the 4th on a two-out single, as NU quickly grabbed its first lead at 6-3.
- After the Timberwolves padded their lead with four additional runs in the bottom of the 6th on a pair of home runs, ESU needed to make a significant comeback in the top of the 7th. Down 10-3, ESU led the inning off with a McKeown single and eventually loaded the bases on a single and a walk. With one out and the bases loaded, the Warriors could not put a dent into the NU lead, as an infield fly and a strikeout ended the contest.
