MILLERSVILLE, Pa. -- With a 7-0 win in the first game of a doubleheader over Millersville, the East Stroudsburg University softball team set a new program record for wins in a season, as ESU split the twinbill with the Marauders on Friday afternoon at Seaber Softball Stadium.
The Warriors (30-6, 5-5 PSAC East) reach the 30-win plateau for the first time in school history with the win. The Marauders, who entered the day tied for the lead in the PSAC East, are now 19-19, 7-4 in PSAC action.
ESU's pitching staff of Katie Zaun (11 strikeouts), Paige Zigmund (3 strikeouts) and Leigh Ann Jenkins (10 strikeouts) combined to strikeout 24 Marauders in the doubleheader, coutning for over half of ESU's outs.
Notables
- Denva Shaw-Tait and Brooke McKeown each recorded two RBIs to pace the offense.
- Sofia Cecchin and Molly Nies each posted three hits on the day, with Nies blasting an RBI triple in game one.
- Also registering RBIs for ESU on the day were Kate Donaghue, and Kaitlyn Caleen.
- Katie Zaun (W, 10-4) continued her impressive season by striking out 11 Marauders for her 10th win of the season. She allowed just two hits, registering her fourth shutout in 13 starts. She lowered her ERA to 1.28 and is now allowing opponents to hit at a clip of .170. She has now struck out at least 10 batters in five starts this season.
- In game two, Zigmund pitched a scoreless two innings, before Leigh Ann Jenkins (L, 8-2) entered the game. Jenkins allowed just three this in four innings, striking out 10 in four innings in the loss.
- ESU's previous high for wins in a season was 29. The mark was set in 2007 and tied last year in the NCAA.
How it Happened - Game One
- The Warriors broke the scoreless tie in the second inning, with Denva Shaw-Tait sending a sacrifice fly to right field to score Cecchin. Donaghue immediately followed with an RBI single, scoring Spencer on the play, as ESU led 2-0 after two frames.
- With Zaun scattering her two hits, ESU picked up an insurance run in the top of the 4th. After a Donaghue double, Caleen followed with a two-bagger herself, as ESU grabbed a 3-0 lead.
- The Warriors increased its lead with two runs in the top of the 6th. A McKeown RBI single scored a pair, while a Nies triple scored ESU's sixth run with two outs.
- Up 6-0, ESU added another run in its final at bats in game one. A Shaw-Tait double with one out scored Spencer, as ESU ended up winning game one with a 7-0 victory.
How It Happened - Game Two
- ESU mustered up two hits in game two, with Nies and Spencer registering singles.
- The Warriors looked to score in the top of 2nd, as Cecchin reached on a Millersville error. Spencer followed with her single. After both runners advanced on a ground out, a flyout would end the half inning.
- Millersville took the lead in the bottom of the 4th. An RBI single did the damage, as 'Ville took a 1-0 lead. The Marauders extended its advantage to 2-0 in the bottom of the 6th, as back-to-back doubles put another tally on the scoreboard.
- With three outs remaining, ESU put a runner on base via a Lexi Wright walk with two outs, but a ground out would end the Warriors' chance with of a sweep. Millersville forced a split with a 2-0 win in game two.
