Warrior Wrestling in Full Swing Despite Off Season

EAST STROUDSBURG -- Several members of the East Stroudsburg University men's and women's wrestling teams have taken the offseason to compete off the collegiate circuit. Sisters Mia and Sofia Macaluso along with Janieliz Cotto have represented the Warriors' women's team, while Luke Ciampa and Matthew Richardson have competed on the men's side. 


Sofia Macaluso, an incoming freshman, earned the Tricia Saunders High School Excellence Award by the National Wrestling Hall of Fame, which honors the nation's most outstanding high school female wrestler for their excellence in wrestling, scholastic achievement, citizenship and community service.  

On the mat earlier this month, Macaluso defeated Colorado Mesa All-American Claire Dicugno at 57kg in consecutive matches, picking up an 8-3 and a 9-2 victory at the Amon G. Carter, Jr. Hall of the Will Rogers Memorial Center to earn a spot on the USA U20 Women's World Team.  


Mia Macaluso, the sister of Sofia, finished fourth at the at USA U20 Worlds at 59 kg. Macaluso was one of two Warrior All-Americans in 2021, finishing fourth-place at 130 with a record of 12-3. Additionally, Mia recently became an individual champion at the US Senior Beach Nationals, dominating the 7-meter ring in the sand. She swept all three of her foes, with three 3-0 victories to win the 60 kg senior women's title on the scenic board walk of Carolina Beach, North Carolina. Macaluso and the remainder of the senior women champions are qualified for the 2022 Beach World Series in Turkey (May 28-29), Spain (June 18-29), France (July 1-2) Greece (July 9-10) and Romania (Sept. 3-4). 


At the Last Chance World Team Trails, Janieliz Cotto took first place and qualified for the Senior World Team Trials. With no one in her weight Cotto, earned an automatic qualification. 


Both Luke Ciampa and Matt Richardson also competed at the Last Chance World Team Trials in Atlantic City. Ciampa posted a 1-2 record in Greco Roman and went 0-2 freestyle record. In freestyle, he fell in two tech falls. In Greco-Roman, he while picked up a win via a bye, before falling via a fall. 

After falling to Curtis Thomas via a pin, Richardson defeated Jasiri Dingle a 12-1 tech fall. His day would end with a 10-0 fall to David Tuttle.
