Volleyball Cruises to Pair of Season-Opening Victories

EAST STROUDSBURG – The East Stroudsburg Volleyball team (2-0) opened the 2022 season with a pair of victories on Friday inside Koehler Fieldhouse. The Warriors swept Pace in the opener 3-0 (25-20, 25-13, 25-13) before returning to defeat Caldwell, 3-1 (25-27, 25-20, 25-16, 25-15), after dropping the opening set.

Notables vs.  Pace

  • Claire Choloux registered a double-double for ESU. The sophomore from France boasted 12 digs and 10 kills to lead ESU. Taylor Haan and Kaitlin Bruchhauser each tallied seven kills.
  • Bruchhauser recorded four blocks in the opener, while Makaela McComas (19) and Sydney Lewellin each posted double figures in assists
  • Haan led the game with three service aces
  • The Warriors outhit the Setters by a wide margin of .326 (36 kills, 10 errors) to -.029 (22 kills, 25 errors)
How it Happened vs. Pace
  • The Setters posted the first two points and built a lead as high as three points at 5-2. The Warriors would tie the contest at 5-5 after three consecutive points. The two squads traded points, with additional tied scores at 6-6, 8-8 and 9-9 before ESU could gain separation. With the score tied at 9-9, the Warriors took control with a 9-2 run to grab a 17-11 lead. Pace cut the deficit to as low as 1 at 20-19, following a Setter sprint of 8-3, but ESU closed the opening set of the season strong with a 5-1 run to take the frame, 25-20.
  • Similar to the opening set, Pace got off to a fast start, winning the first four points. With the Setters holding a 5-1 advantage, the furious Warriors battled back to take a lead at 8-7. Pace and ESU were tied at 10-10, prior to the defending PSAC East Regular Season Champion taking control once again with a scoring run of 9-1, building a comfortable eight-point lead at 19-11. ESU closed the set by earning six of the final seven points to secure a 25-13 set two win and take a 2-0 advantage in the match.
  • This time it was ESU that built an early lead, grabbing an 11-7 advantage. After two consecutive points from the Setters sliced their deficit to two, the Warriors took full control with a 12-3 sprint and closed its first match of the season strong by earning 14 of the final 18 points to secure the 3-0 sweep with a 25-13 set three victory.
Notables vs. Caldwell
  • McComas notched a double-double for the Warriors as the sophomore tallied a team-high 23 assists to go with 14 digs
  • Kaylee LoPresto was just shy of a double-double, finishing with 14 kills and nine digs
  • Freshman Anna Coulter stuffed the stat sheet with eight kills, seven digs, four blocks and four aces
  • Junior Makayla Baca finished with a team-high 15 digs while adding a pair of assists and three aces
  • The Warriors recorded 16 aces led by Coulter, Hann and McComas with four a piece
How it Happened vs. Caldwell
  • Caldwell jumped on ESU early, taking a 7-3 lead before the Warriors notched four straight points to tie the opening set at 7-7. With the score deadlocked at 10-10, the Cougars grabbed a 14-10 advantage until the Warriors scored eight of the next 12 points to even the set at 18-18. Following a timeout, Caldwell pulled ahead by as many as two points on several occasions, but the Warriors answered every time, ultimately tying the score at 24-24. With ESU looking grab the first set, the Cougars scored three straight points to win the frame 27-25, taking a 1-0 lead in the match.
  • Similar to the opening set, the teams traded points with the score tied at 4-4 and 10-10 before ESU scored eight of the next 12 to go ahead 18-14. However, the Cougars answered with a quick 4-0 run to even the score at 18-18. The Warriors closed out the set strong, outscoring Caldwell 7-2, to secure the set two victory (25-20) and even the match at 1-1.
  • With ESU trailing 4-3 to begin the third set, the Warriors found their rhythm using a 9-0 scoring run to pull in front of Caldwell, 12-4. The Cougars chipped slowly as the Warriors' lead dwindled down to 16-13, before a 7-0 spurt put ESU back ahead 23-13 and ultimately taking the set 25-16 for a 2-1 advantage in the match.
  • ESU kept their foot on the gas in the fourth set, jumping ahead 8-3 before the Cougars were forced into a timeout. The teams swapped points the rest of the way with the Warriors lead falling no lower than five points, as the Warriors went on to win the set 25-15 and the match 3-1.

The Warriors return to action on Saturday afternoon, when ESU hosts IUP (1:00 p.m.) and Jefferson (6:00 p.m.) in a pair of contests at Koehler Fieldhouse.
