ERIE – The East Stroudsburg volleyball team finished their trip out to western Pennsylvania 2-2 after sweeping West Virginia Wesleyan (25-21, 25-16, 25-13) in their final match of the weekend on Saturday inside McComb Fieldhouse. The Warriors were swept by PSAC West foe Edinboro (16-25, 18-25, 21-25) to open the day.
The Warriors go to 5-7 on the season while the Fighting Scots improve to 8-2 and the Bobcats drop to 1-7.
Notables vs. Edinboro
- Freshman Anna Coulter paced ESU with seven kills while junior Claire Choloux and Kaylee LoPresto each had six a piece
- Junior Makayla Baca tallied 17 digs while freshman Sydney Lewellin had double-digit assists with 19
- Edinboro outhit ESU by a wide margin of .308 (43 kills, 11 errors) to .083 (30 kills, 21 errors). In the first set, the Fighting Scots recorded a .400 hitting percentage on 16 kills and two errors
- The Fighting Scots held an edge in blocks (10-2) and aces (8-4)
How it Happened vs. Edinboro
- Edinboro raced out in front of the Warriors early in the first set, leading 11-4 behind six kills, three aces and two errors from ESU. The Fighting Scots went on to score seven of the next ten points, pushing their advantage to 18-7 and ultimately closing out the Warriors, 25-16, for a first set victory.
- With the score tied at 1-1 to begin the second set, the Fighting Scots scored 11 of the next 16 points to go up 12-6. Edinboro's lead to grew as many as seven at 15-8, but after an ESU timeout the Warriors trimmed their deficit to 16-12. ESU would get as close as three points the rest of the way as the Fighting Scots finished out the set at 25-18 for a 2-0 lead in the match.
- The Fighting Scots took control early in the third set at 7-3 before the Warriors answered with a 6-1 run to grab a 9-8 lead. The teams swapped the next several points and with the score tied at 14-14, Edinboro recorded six straight points to take a 20-14 lead. With the Fighting Scots up 23-16, ESU battled back to make the score 23-21, before Edinboro finished out the match 25-21 for the sweep.
Notables vs. West Virginia Wesleyan
- Sophomore Taylor Haan and LoPresto led the Warriors with nine kills each while Choloux had eight
- Lewellin had a career-high 29 assists to go along with four kills, four blocks and three digs
- Baca notched another double-digit dig performance with 15
- ESU hit .227 (38 kills, 16 errors) compared to .028 (27 kills, 14 errors) for West Virginia Wesleyan
- The Warriors also held an advantage over West Virginia Wesleyan in aces (7-4), blocks (9-7) and digs (47-37)
How it Happened vs. West Virginia Wesleyan
- ESU and West Virginia went back and forth to the open the match but with the score tied at 9-9, the Bobcats rattled off three straight points to go up 12-9. The Warriors answered right back to even the score and jumped in front 17-15, before a 3-0 run my West Virginia Wesleyan put the Bobcats back ahead. Then with the score tied at 20-20, the Warriors scored five of the last six points to earn a 25-21 set one win and 1-0 lead in the match.
- West Virginia Wesleyan responded to begin the second set, jumping out to an 8-4 advantage before a 5-0 sprint by ESU gave the Warriors a 9-8 edge. The Bobcats regained a lead at 11-9, but ESU went on to score 13 of the next 15 points to go ahead 22-13. ESU would take a 2-0 lead in the match after closing out the second frame, 25-16.
- After the Bobcats scored the first point of the final set, ESU strung together a 9-0 run to grab a 9-1 lead. The Warriors stretched their advantage to 14-4 before West Virginia Wesleyan trimmed their deficit to 14-8. ESU would go on to outscore the Bobcats 11-5 the rest of the way to finish off the match 25-13 for the sweep.
