SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.V. – The East Stroudsburg University volleyball team extended their winning streak to four games after coming from behind to defeat Shepherd, 3-2, on Friday night inside the Butcher Center. The set scores were 25-18, 14-25, 26-28, 25-20, 15-8.
The Warriors improve to 8-7 overall, 2-0 in the PSAC East and 4-2 all-time against the Rams, who drop their sixth consecutive match, falling to 8-6 on the season and 0-2 in the conference.
Notables vs. Shepherd
- Redshirt junior Kaylee LoPresto notched her second straight double-double with 11 kills and 14 digs while adding a pair of blocks
- Freshman Sydney Lewellin filled up the stat sheet, finishing with 8 kills, 6 digs, a career-high 36 assists and 4 aces
- Sophomore Taylor Haan did a little bit of everything for the Warriors with 3 kills, 13 digs, 2 assists, two blocks and an ace
- Junior Makayla Baca had a game-high 26 digs for her 13th double-digit performance of the season
- In her return to the court, junior Sydney Stone recorded nine kills and digs a piece, while freshman Anna Coulter added 8 kills and 5 blocks
- Shepherd outhit ESU by a small margin of .123 to .100, but the Warriors recorded more kills, 51-50
- The Rams held the edge in blocks (17-8), but the Warriors led the way in aces (7-6)
How it Happened vs. Shepherd
- The Warriors jumped out to a 5-2 lead to begin the match before Shepherd went on a 5-0 run to go ahead 7-5. Trailing by one, ESU went on a 5-0 spurt of their own to regain a 15-10 edge. Out of a Rams' timeout, the teams traded the points the rest of the way with the ESU's lead falling now lower than three, as the Warriors closed out the frame, 25-18, for a 1-0 lead in the match.
- ESU carried that momentum over into the second set, racing out to a 4-0 advantage, until the Rams slowly clawed their way back to tie the score at 10-10. Shepherd would proceed to score eight of the next nine points, which included a 7-0 run to build a 18-11 lead. The Rams would outscore ESU, 7-3, the rest of the way to earn a 25-14 set two victory which tied the match at 1-1.
- Similar to the previous set, the Warriors grabbed an early lead at 6-1, but not until Shepherd battled back to even the score at 10-10. The teams swapped the next several points but with the frame knotted at 14-14, ESU scored four of the next five points to take a 18-15 advantage. The Warriors continued their run by stretching their lead to 22-16, until the Rams went on a 6-1 spurt to pull within one at 23-22. With ESU looking to close out Shepherd, the Rams fended off two straight set points to tie the score at 24-24. The Warriors had two other opportunities to finish off the Rams, who would score the final three points for a 28-26 set three win for a 2-1 advantage in the match.
- The teams began the fourth set by swapping the opening points, each using their own 4-0 runs until the score was tied at 9-9. ESU would then pull ahead 12-9, before the Rams quickly evened it back up at 12-12. With Shepherd then leading 15-14, the Warriors answered with four quick points on three errors from the Rams to grab a 18-15 lead. A Shepherd timeout would help the Rams get back within one point at 20-19, but the Warriors would ultimately hold on to take the fourth set, 25-20, evening the match at 2-2.
- With the score tied at 3-3, the Warriors were able to take multiple two-point leads at 5-3 and 7-5 before going ahead 9-6, which forced Shepherd into a timeout. Out the break, the Warriors finished out strong, scoring six of the next eight points to win the set (15-8) and the match.
