SHIPPENSBURG – The East Stroudsburg University volleyball team saw its four-game winning streak come to an end, as Shippensburg grinded out a five-set victory over the Warriors on Saturday afternoon inside Heiges Field House. The set scores were 25-18, 17-25, 25-21, 17-25 and 13-15.
The Warriors drop to 8-8 on the season and 2-1 in the PSAC East, while the Raiders improve to 8-8 overall and 2-1 in the conference.
Notables vs. Shepherd
- Freshman Anna Coulter paced ESU with a team-high 12 kills on 17 attacks (.529 hitting percentage), while adding five digs and five blocks
- Redshirt junior Kaylee LoPresto also recorded double figures in kills with 10, to go along with six digs and two aces
- Sophomore Taylor Haan contributed to a number of different areas, finishing with eight kills, 10 digs, three assists and one ace and block a piece
- Freshman Sydney Lewellin filled it up for the second straight match by logging four kills, 36 assists, nine digs, four blocks and four aces
- Junior Makayla Baca recorded her third consecutive 20+ dig effort after notching 20 to bring her season total to 250
- The Raiders outhit the Warriors by a slight margin of .185 (57 kills, 27 errors) to .151 (44 kills, 23 errors)
- Shippensburg also held a small advantage in blocks at 10-9, but ESU had the slim edge in aces, 10-9
How it Happened vs. Shippensburg
- The teams traded points to open the first frame as the score was tied on numerous occasions (3-3, 6-6, 8-8, 9-9, 10-10 11-11), before the Warriors rattled four of the next seven points to pull ahead 15-14. It was all ESU the rest of the way as the Warriors proceed to outscore the Raiders, 10-4, to earn a 25-18 set one victory for a 1-0 lead in the match.
- Shippensburg jumped out to an early 7-2 lead to begin the second set, until the Warriors battled back to make the score 8-6. The Raiders answered right away with 5-2 run to stretch their edge to 13-8, which forced ESU into a timeout. Out the break, it was all Shippensburg as the Raiders pushed their advantage to 18-10, but not before ESU scored four straight to trim their deficit to 18-14. The Warriors would not get any closer during the remainder of the frame as Shippensburg took the second set, 25-17, to knot the match at 1-1.
- It was back and forth to start the third frame as the Raiders were up 8-7, before a quick 5-0 spurt by ESU gave them a 12-8 advantage. Shippensburg would pull within two at 12-10, but the Warriors would go on to outpace the Raiders, 9-6, over the next 15 points to push their lead to 21-16. ESU looked to be in control of the set, going ahead 24-16 after a Shippensburg timeout, but the Raiders rallied to make the score 24-21, before an attack error gave ESU the 25-21 win for a 2-1 edge in the match.
- It was all Shippensburg at the start of the fourth set as the Raiders built a 10-4 lead before going on to score 11 of the next 14 points to go ahead 21-7. The Warriors didn't go down without a fight, using a 10-3 run to trim the Raiders' edge to seven, before they closed out the set, 25-17, to tie it up at 2-2.
- With Shippensburg ahead 5-4 in the final set, the Warriors put together a 3-0 run to take a 7-5 advantage. The Raiders would find their footing out a timeout, producing five straight points to go back ahead 10-7. The Warriors answered right back by knotting the score at 11-11, but Shippensburg would score four of the next six points to take the frame (15-13) and the match, 3-2.
