EAST STROUDSBURG – The East Stroudsburg University men's soccer team responded with a pair of goals with less than 20 minutes to play to come from behind to defeat No. 25 West Chester, 2-1, on Wednesday evening inside Eiler-Martin Stadium.
With the victory, the Warriors (4-6, 3-2) are now tied with Millersville for third place in the PSAC East with nine points. The Golden Rams (7-2-1, 4-1-1) fall for the first time in conference action and see its eight-game unbeaten streak come to an end.
After a scoreless 62 minutes, it was West Chester that opened the scoring off a free kick from Gio Jimenez that was put in the back of the net by Craig Potts. The Warriors responded 10 minutes later, with Trevor Paone tying the contest in the 73rd minute of play. Just over five minutes later, Ethan Flickinger's third goal of his freshman season was the difference maker, as he deposited the game-winner off a pass from Ignasi Cucurella in the 78th minute.
Notables
- The Warriors held a strong advantage in terms of possession and shots against the nationally-ranked foe. ESU led 22-15 on shots and 15-6 on shots on goal.
- ESU tallied the lone corner kick of the contest in the second half.
- Hubert Herrera (3), Trevor Paone (2), Colby Raymond (2) and Abdulla Nuredini all tallied multiple shots on goal for ESU.
- The win for ESU against WCU is the Warriors' first win against the Golden Rams since 2014 and its first victory at Eiler-Martin Stadium over its rival since 2009. The win snapped a 12-game winless streak (0-9-3). Nine of the 12 meetings were decided by single goal or less.
- In the win, freshman Warrior goalkeeper Brayden Evans made five stops in goal. Daniel Good countered with 13 saves for West Chester.
- With the ESU women's soccer team earning a 1-0 win over #13 Bloomsburg earlier in the evening, it marks the first time both Warrior soccer teams earned wins over ranked opponents since 1999. On Oct. 23, 1999, the Warrior men defeated #9 Dowling, 3-2 at home, while the ESU women's soccer team registered a 2-1 overtime victory against #25 West Virginia Wesleyan that same day.
- The Warriors first accomplished the feat in 1997, when ESU downed 10th ranked Lock Haven in the PSAC Tournament in a pair of 2-1 contests at LHU on Nov. 8, 1997.
How it Happened
- 63' | Off a free kick, Jimenez sent a deep pass from 45-yards out. With Evans looking to punch the potential dangerous shot away, Potts was able to make a late break towards the pass and just headed in a shot to the lower-left corner.
- 73' |On the far side, Raymond was able to find Paone with a centering pass. The native of Ocean City, N.J. was able to get a foot on the impressive pass and was able to bury a shot to the lower-right corner with Good approaching.
- 78' | Â With several players fighting for possession about 20 yards from the goal, Cucurella was able to direct a superior pass to the far-left side to Flickinger. With no Golden Ram in the immediate vicinity, Flickinger sent a similar shot to Paone's to the lower-right corner. He celebrated with his patented backflip.
