EAST STROUDSBURG – Highlighted by first-place finishes from freshmen Jason Athey and Layton Schmick, the East Stroudsburg University men's wrestling team dominated the 56th Annual ESU Open on Sunday inside Koehler Fieldhouse as the Warriors had 12 additional wrestlers place in the top-six.
ESU finished at the top of the team standings with 234.5 points which was 81 more than Centenary (153.5) in second place.
Athey and Schmick became the first ESU Open champions for the Warriors since Mike Raccioppi (174) in 2018. Notching second place finishes for ESU was junior Luke Ciampa (174), freshman Shawn Redfield (141) and first-year student David Pierson (285)
Also placing in the top-six for the Warriors was freshman Kasim Bahar (3rd, 174), sophomore Brady Carter (4th, 125), junior Ajay Hiller (4th, 197), senior Jacob Remolina (5th, 149), sophomore Robert Burke (5th, 174), freshman Jarrett Pantuso (5th, 184), senior Matthew Richardson (5th, 197), senior Jack Spahn (6th, 157) and junior Jaccob Gonzalez (6th, 165).
First Place Finishes
Athey went a perfect 3-0 at 125 pounds, producing a major decision to start the day, followed by a fall over fell teammate Carter and a 9-3 decision against Josh Jasionowicz, who was wrestling unattached.
Schmick made quick work of the 285 pound bracket as the freshman produced a trio of falls which included a pin over Pierson in the finals.
Second Place Finishes
Redfield was a perfect 3-0 through his first three matches, recording a pin and a major decision before falling in the finals to take second place at 141.
Ciampa cruised through his first three matches of the day as the junior posted a pair of falls and a major decision before stumbling in the finals to earn a runner-up finish at 174.
Pierson took care of business with three consecutive falls before getting pinned by Schmick in the championship to come in second place at 285.
Third Place Finishes
Bahar alternated wins and losses in the 174 pound bracket as the freshman earned a decision in his first action of the day before grinding out a 4-2 decision in the third place match.
Fourth Place Finishes
Carter started the day by producing a decision and major decision before falling in his last two matches to finish fourth at 125.
Hiller had a similar day at 197 pounds as the junior had a 10-6 decision and pin (3:57) until dropping his final two matches to take fourth place.
Fifth Place Finishes
After Remolina dropped his first match of the day to teammate Patrick Noon, who was wrestling unattached, the senior ripped off five consecutive wins which included a pin, a tech fall and major decision to finish fifth at 149.
Burke bounced back in impressive fashion following a loss in his opening match as the sophomore produced three straight falls to earn a fifth place finish at 174.
Following a defeat in his first match, Pantuso used a major decision (11-3) and decision (12-6) to capture a fifth place finish at 184.
Richardson went 2-2 on the day as senior responded following his opening loss with a major decision and pin before falling in his last match to take fifth at 197.
Sixth Place Finishes
Spahn fell in his first match of the day but bounced back with a pin, a tech fall and decision before dropping the final contest to secure a sixth place finish at 157.
Rounding out the place finishers from ESU was Gonzalez in sixth at 165 pounds as the junior went 3-2 with a pair of pins and technical fall.
