12/16/2023 11:25:00 PM

INDIANAPOLIS, IN. – Freshman Layton Schmick (285) is the lone Warrior still wrestling for the East Stroudsburg University men's wrestling team following day one of the 44th Midwest Classic, hosted by UIndy, on Saturday inside Nicoson Hall.

Schmick opened the day by upsetting Notre Dame's sixth-ranked La'Ron Park in double overtime and advanced to the next round with a 2-1 decision against Wheeling's Jake Powell. Squaring off against UMary's 10th-ranked Luke Tweeton with a chance to move the semifinals, the Carlise native went to overtime before falling 5-1 following an escape and take down in the first overtime period.

Schmick, who moved to an impressive 17-2 overall following today's trio of matches, will look to battle back in the consolation bracket tomorrow morning beginning with Newberry's ninth-ranked Devon Rice.

The Midwest Classic featured an extremely strong field as 21 of the 51 teams appeared in the latest NWCA Division II Top 25 with seven of the top 10 teams in the field.
