LEWISBURG – Destiny Thompson continues to light up the track as the junior broke the program record in the 60m as the East Stroudsburg University women's track and field team posted five top-eight finishes on day one of the 2023 PSAC Indoor Championships on Saturday at Gerhard Fieldhouse.
Breaking her second program record in as many weeks, Thompson secured a spot in the championship round in the 60m after crossing the line in 7.59. The junior eclipsed the previous record of 7.62 held by Tiana Webster (2020) and Danielle Smith (2015),
Securing spots in tomorrow's finals were Jeanette Jones (400m, 60mH) and Thompson (60m, 200m) in their respective events.
After the first day of the PSAC Indoor Championships, the Warriors sit in fourth place in the team standings with 22 points as Edinboro holds the top spot at 43 points.
Pentathlon Highlights
Representing the Warriors in the pentathlon, Elyssa Pemu recorded a fifth place finish after accumulating 2961 points, which ranks as the 10th-best performance in school history.
To begin the pentathlon, Pemu recorded a ninth place finish in the 60m hurdles after notching a time of 10.01.
Pemu returned by taking fourth in the high jump as the junior matched her personal-best height after clearing the bar at 1.55m (5-1).
In the shot put, Pemu notched a personal-best throw of 9.20m (30-2 ¼) to capture a seventh place finish in the event.
Pemu moved to the sand pit for the long jump, earning a 10th place finish after leaping a personal-best mark of 4.78m (15-8 ¼).
The career day for Pemu finished with the 800m as the junior took fourth with a season-best finish of 2:38.00.
Running Highlights
Jones punched her ticket to tomorrow's finals in the 400m as she finished sixth in the preliminaries with a time of 1:00.02. The Middlesex, N.J. native was back on the track for the 60m hurdles, taking third in the prelims at 9.07 to advance to the finals.
On her way to a school record in the 60m, Thompson finished third in the prelims and had the second-best time in heat one at 7.59. The Nanjemoy, Maryland native returned for the 200m, securing her spot in the championship after clocking a time of 25.22 in fourth place.
Field Event Highlights
The Warriors delivered a monster performance in the weight throw as two-time All-American Elizabeth Makar finished as the runner-up with a personal-best mark of 16.83m (55-5 ¾), while junior Isabella Marte was right behind in third after recording a personal-best toss of 16.32m (53-6 ½). Makar's performance ranks second all-time in program history and was less than an inch from the school record while Marte's effort moves her up to fourth all-time.
Kamya Edmonds just missed scoring points for the Warriors in the long jump as the senior took ninth with a mark of 5.39m (17-8 ¼).\
