EAST STROUDSBURG – The East Stroudsburg University women's track and field team set a school record in the 55m dash and captured a trio of first-place finishes as the Warriors hosted the 23rd Annual DeSchriver Invitational on Sunday at Koehler Fieldhouse and Zimbar Gymnasium.
The highlight of the day for the Warriors came in the 55m dash as
Destiny Thompson set the program, Koehler Fieldhouse and DeSchriver Invitational record with a time of 7.09 on her way to a first place finish in the event. Thompson eclipsed a 23-year-old record previously held by Cheryl Griffin at 7.13. With the time converted to 7.64 for the 60m, Thompson also earned an NCAA provisional mark for the event.
Additionally, the Warriors captured first-place finishes in the long jump from
Kamya Edmonds and shot put from
Elizabeth Makar as well a PSAC automatic qualifying mark in the pole vault from
Hannah Frankenfield.
Running Highlights
The Warriors kicked off the day on the track with a pair of top-10 finishes in the 5000m as
Jada Williams took ninth with a time of 21:17.46, followed
Samantha Brawner in 10th at 21:34.25.
In the 4x200m, ESU grabbed a third place finish as the relay team of
Amelia Tremper,
Elyssa Pemu,
Lauren Reed and Edmonds clocked a time of 1:53.32.
A trio of the Warriors listed above returned for the 55mH as Edmonds paced ESU in 10th place after crossing the line in 10.00.
Along with Thompson's performance in the 55m,
Kayla Horning was the runner-up with a time of 7.39 and
Ariel Kyle took sixth after crossing the line in 7.60.
Kyle was back on the track for the 400m, where she took third after clocking a season-best time of 1:02.13.
As the only ESU runner competing in the 800m,
Megan Elgrim finished third after the freshman crossed the finish line in a personal-best time of 2:33.62.
Back on the track for the 200m, Horning claimed a third place finish with a time of 26.83 while
Maya Girdy was a half second behind in fifth at 27.19.
ESU concluded the afternoon on the track with a second place finish in the 4x400m as the quartet off Thompson, Reed, Elgrim and Girdy notched a time of 4:14.47.
Field Event Highlights
ESU used Zimbar Gym to their advantage as the Warriors dominated the weight throw with five of the top-seven finishers. Makar saved her best for last as the two-time All-American recorded a mark of 16.68m (54-9) on her final attempt for a runner-up finish. Makar's throw was a personal-best and ranks third all-time in program history.
Isabella Marte was right behind in third with a personal-best toss of 15.80m (51-10) and
Zionette Salahuddin took fourth after notching the ninth-best throw in school history at 15.03m (49-4). Rounding out the finishes for the Warriors was
Madison Horahan (14.92m – 48-11) in sixth and
Samiyah Little (14.75m – 48-5) right behind in seventh.
A busy day continued for Edmonds in the long pump as the senior captured the top spot in the event. Edmonds continued to inch closer to the school record as she recorded a personal-best mark of 5.63m (18-5 ¾) on her third attempt. She was also .02 meters from notching an NCAA provisional mark in the event. Horning was not far behind in third as the sophomore posted a leap of 5.07m (16-7 ½) on her second attempt.
Nickolina Annelli snagged a runner-up finish in the pole vault after clearing the bar at a season-best height of 3.60m (11-9 ¾), which set up the opportunity to break her own school record with three attempts at 3.70m (12-1 ¾).
Heather Gaughran increased her season-best height to 3.35m (11-0), which ranks fifth all-time in program history and Frankenfield finished in a tie for sixth after recording a PSAC qualifying mark of 3.20m (10-6).
The Warriors went 1-2 in the shot put as Makar returned to earn a first place finish with a mark of 13.46m (44-2) while Horahan was the runner-up after recording a personal-best toss of 13.12m (43-0 ½) which moved her up to fifth all-time in school history.
In the high jump,
Elyssa Pemu cleared a season-best height of 1.45m (4-9) on her way to a ninth place finish.
