SPARKS, Md. – Tied 6-6 in the third quarter, the No. 8 East Stroudsburg University lacrosse team finished strong, recording six of the final eight goals of the game to defeat Frostburg State, in a neutral-site battle at the USA Lacrosse Headquarters' Tierney Field on Thursday evening.
The Warriors (2-1) bounce back after a loss to nationally-ranked Pace last weekend. The Bobcats (1-2) fall for the second consecutive contest.
Campbell Heller paced ESU with four goals, while Emily Mitarotonda registered three goals and two assists for five points. Kiki Fitzpatrick also found the back of the cage three times.
Notables
- Freshman Jolee Roth tallied three points on a goal and two assists. As a defender McKenna Conklin connected on a goal, while Mary Fitzsimmons added an assist.
- Mitarotonda stuffed the stat sheet with six turnovers, four draw controls and nine ground balls. She recorded her 20th consecutive hat trick with her final goal against the Bobcats.
- Campbell Heller scooped four ground balls and three draw controls in the outing.
- Along with goal, Conklin posted five caused turnovers, while Oliva Wenrich and Taylor Vara both added a pair of CTs.
- Freshman Hannah Schiemer earned three draw controls.
- ESU led 33-22 in shots, 28-16 on shots on goal, had 13 less turnovers (27-14), led 32-21 in ground balls. FSU led 14-9 on draws.
How It Happened
- Roth opened the scoring in the second minute, depositing a pass from Mitarotonda.
- After FSU evened the contest a few minutes later, Mitarotonda was able to score her first goal at 8:03 and then assisted Heller's first goal of the game at 6:08 to take a 3-1 lead.
- The Bobcat would steal momentum for the time being, closing the first quarter with two goals and opened the second period with a pair of goals, as FSU led 5-3 with 12:08 remaining until halftime.
- ESU settled, with Fitzpatrick scoring ESU's first goal of the second quarter with 3:18 remaining. The Warriors were able to tie and take a lead at 6-5 during the final minute of action, with goals from Heller and Fitzpatrick.
- After Frostburg evened the game at 6-6 with the opening goal of the second half, the Warriors seized control. ESU scored six of the final eight goals of the game, taking an 8-6 lead after unassisted goals from Mitarotonda and Conklin.
- FSU ended the run with a goal at the 3:46 mark, but Heller 's third goal of the game erased it for the final goal of the quarter.
- Leading 9-7 after three quarters, ESU closed strong with three goals, while giving up just one to take home a 12-8 victory from the USA Lacrosse Headquarters.
