MOBILE, Ala. – The preseason accolades continue to pile in for East Stroudsburg University football defensive end Deshawn McCarthy, as the Philadelphia native was named to the Reese's Senior Bowl Watch List, the organization announced on Wednesday morning.
Along with the Reese's Senior Bowl, McCarthy, a two-time All-PSAC East First Team selection and 2021 AFCA All-America First Team honoree has now received preseason recognition from the Shrine Bowl and Lindy's Sports. He was also named to the Allstate AFCA Good Works Team for his involvement in the community.
Last season, McCarthy compiled 36 tackles, 13.5 tackles for loss, six sacks, three forced fumbles and four pass deflections. In the PSAC, he ranked sixth in sacks and ninth in tackles for loss. He led the conference in forced fumbles per game.
Entering his senior season, McCarthy looks to become ESU's all-time sacks leader. His 25 career sacks rank fifth-most among Warriors, just eight sacks behind Des Hussey (1991) and Joe Ruedt's (1992) 33 sacks. In 31 career games, McCarthy has registered 106 tackles, nine passes defended, five forced fumbles and two fumble recoveries.
The Reese's Senior Bowl is widely regarded as the preeminent college football all-star game and the first stage in the NFL Draft process. The longest continual-running all-star game has taken place in Mobile, Alabama the past 74 years. More than 900 NFL personnel, including key decision-makers from all 32 teams, and over 1100 media members from around the country were credentialed this year. This past April, the game produced 100 total picks for the third straight year, representing 40 percent of the entire NFL draft, including 40 selected on the first two days.
McCarthy and the Warriors open up the 2023 season on Thurs., Aug. 31 at 7:05 p.m. at Eiler-Martin Stadium.
