ROCKVILLE CENTRE, N.Y. – The East Stroudsburg University men's soccer team posted a pair of goals in each half and held Molloy to just one shot on goal in its second consecutive dominant victory to open the 2023 season in a 4-0 road win over the Lions on Sunday evening at RVC Sports Complex.
The Warriors (2-0) enter their home opener undefeated, while the Lions (1-0) suffer its first loss after a 1-0 decision against Saint Anselm last week.
Notables
- Ignasi Cucurella Tuset posted a pair of second-half goals to seal the victory for the Warriors. He leads ESU with three goals and has six points in two games this season.
- Two-time All-PSAC East selection Colby Raymond scored ESU's opening goal on a penalty kick. He also scored against Felician. He ranks second on the team in points with five and is tied with Nathan Brady, who each have two goals. Raymond's goal was the 11th of his career in the Red and Black.
- Cayetano Diaz posted his first career goal in the first half against Molloy, capitalizing on a rebound off a shot by Bradley Turocy.
- Trevor Paone assisted on the second goal of Cucurella Tuset. It's his fifth career assist.
- In his first appearance this season, Brayden Evans made a save on his lone opportunity to do so in the clean sheet performance. Evans shutout is the second of his career after a 1-0 road shutout at Shippensburg last season.
- ESU led 14-5 on shots, 7-1 on shots on goal, 7-5 on corners. There were no cards issued by the officials.
- In two games to start the Tom Mustac-era, ESU has outscored the opposition by a mark of 8-1.
- The win for the Warriors snaps a two-game losing skid to the Lions, after suffering 1-0 losses in 2021 and 2022. ESU tied Molloy in the 2019 season opener with a 1-1 draw. ESU is now 5-3-1 all-time against Molloy and earned its first win since 2011.
How It Happened
- 4' | Nathan Bradway was clipped in the box in just the fourth minute of action. Raymond was able to convert the penalty kick opportunity into a goal, firing a shot to the upper right of the net, past the diving goalkeeper.
- 26' | The Warriors doubled its lead, starting with a corner kick from Cucurella. After finding Bradley Turocy, his shot hit the post, but was cleaned up by Diaz, instantly putting the rebound into the back of the net.
- 58' | The Warriors took a commanding second half lead with Cucurella's second goal of the season. After a nice pass from Raymond, Cucurella split a pair of defenders in the box. With another Lion attempting to prevent a shot, the native of Spain buried a low shot to the far post to beat the goalkeeper.
- 69' | On a goal kick, Evans booted a long pass, which was headed by a Lion and into possession of Trevor Paone. Paone quickly passed ahead to the open Cucurella, who once again beat the goalkeeper with a low shot to the left for the final goal of the contest.
