COLLEGEVILLE – Back on the mat for the first time in 27 days, junior Patrick Noonan (149) and freshman Layton Schmick (285) led the East Stroudsburg University men's wrestling team with first place finishes at Ursinus' Will Abele Invitational on Saturday inside the Floy Lewis Bakes Center.
Additionally, juniors Luke Ciampa (165) and Ajay Hiller (197) posted second place finishes at their respective weight classes.
Noonan, an Iowa State transfer and product of Stroudsburg High School, made a splash in his ESU debut as the junior went a perfect 5-0 with three technical falls and two major decisions on his way to a first-place finish at 149 pounds.
Noonan outscored his opponents an impressive 70-8, which included three consecutive 15-0 technical falls to begin the day. The Stroudsburg native used a major decision (13-4) over the College of New Jersey's Michael Conklin in the semifinal and took home the title with a 12-4 victory over RIT's Mike Glynn.
Following the holiday break, 12th-ranked Schmick picked up right where he left off as the freshman finished 4-0 with a pair of falls and major decisions. Schmick captured his fourth title of the season as he was previously victorious at the ESU Open (11/5), Bob Quade Cyclone Open (12/3) and Nassau Open (12/10). The Carlise native improved to 21-3 overall with 10 pins in his first campaign with the Warriors.
Ciampa fell just short of defending his title at 165 pounds as the junior went 5-1 his way to a runner-up finish. The Jefferson, N.J. native opened the day with consecutive pins, followed by two decisions and one major decision before falling to Ursinus' Shawn Marchesano in the finals. The Jefferson, N.J. native pushed his recorded to 23-5 on the season and 60-18 for his career.
On his way to a second place finish at 197 pounds, Hiller produced a 4-1 record with two falls. The East Stroudsburg native pinned his first two opponents and advanced to the finals following a pair of decisions, before dropping in the championship match to Oneonta's Carson Licastri. Hiller moved to 18-8 on the season and 42-27 in his career.
Making a return to the mat for the first time since the ESU Open (11/5), sophomore Brady Carter earned a fourth place finish at 125 after finishing the day 3-2 with a fall and major decision. The Lacey Township, N.J. native started 3-0 before falling to College of New Jersey's Matt Griffin in the semifinals and taking a medical forfeit in the third-place match.
Matthew Richardson followed a similar path at 197 as the senior opened the day with a pin over Elmira's Kahajen Smith, a fall against Southern Virigina's Loyal Holm and a 7-3 decision versus College of New Jersey's Christropher Stavrou before stumbling in his final two matches.
