No. 14 ESU Shuts Out West Chester in Game Two to Force Split

Sarah Davenport fired 13 strikeouts in game two's 2-0 win

WEST CHESTER, Pa. – After falling in the opening game by a score of 7-2, the 14th-ranked East Stroudsburg University softball's Abbie Landrum and Sarah Davenport combined to shut out West Chester in game two, earning a 2-0 victory on Friday afternoon at the WCU Softball Field.

The Warriors improved to 25-7, 7-3 PSAC with the game two win. The Golden Rams are now 16-9, 5-3 following the win and loss.

Pitching Notables
  • In game two, Abbie Landrum and Sarah Davenport (W, 12-3) combined for the shutout, with Landrum allowing two hits, while firing a strikeout in the first inning. Davenport entered the contest in the second inning, firing 13 strikeouts while allowing just one hit over the final six innings to pick up the victory. Davenport walked just one batter.
  • Davenport lowered her ERA to 1.27 and now has 138 strikeouts in just 82.2 innings of work.
  • Zigmund (L, 12-4) suffered just her fourth loss of the season in game one's outing. She allowed seven runs on five hits in seven innings, striking out seven batters.
Hitting Notables
  • In game one, Reilly Vicendese and Abigail Weirich connected on back-to-back solo home runs on consecutive pitches, to produce the Warriors' two runs in game one in the top of the 6th. The home run for Vicendese is her first this season.
  • Kate Donaghue opened the scoring in game two, smacking an RBI single in the top of the 2nd.
  • Katie Master added a run of insurance in the top of the 5th, smacking a solo home run to lift ESU to 2-0 lead. The home run for Master was her fifth of the season, which paces the team and is tied for sixth in the PSAC.
  • Delaney Ridgell (3-5) belted two singles and a double, while Denva Shaw-Tait (2-6) also recorded multiple hits.
How It Happened – Game 1
  • WCU opened the scoring in the bottom of the 3rd with a leadoff home run by Paige Marabell.
  • The Golden Rams put up a five spot in the bottom of the 4th to take a 6-0 lead. After a pair of singles, a wild pitch allowed WCU's second run to score. A two-RBI single scored two more, while another Marabell home run accounted for the sixth run.
  • Mairead Hopkins finished the scoring for WCU in the bottom of the 5th, lifting the Golden Rams to a 7-0 lead.
  • The Warriors got two runs back in the top of the 6th, with back-to-back home runs from Vicendese and Weirich, to cut the deficit to 7-2. ESU could not add any additional runs the rest of the way for the final score of 7-2.
How It Happened – Game 2
  • The Warriors got off to a better start in game two, as a two-out double from Shaw-Tait in the top of the 2nd put a runner in scoring position. Donaghue followed with a single to left field to score pinch-runner Jade Hassler.
  • After now allowing a hit in the first inning, Landrum gave up a pair of singles top open the bottom of the 2nd, as Davenport entered the contest. She forced a ground out and got out of the jam with consecutive strikeouts to keep the Warriors' 1-0 lead.
  • With one-out in the top of the 5th, Master blasted her fifth home run and first on the road this season, extending ESU's lead to 2-0.
  • Davenport cruised to the win, allowing her lone hit with single in the bottom of the 7th, but bounced back to fire three strikeouts to seal the 2-0 win.
