MILLERSVILLE, Pa. – The East Stroudsburg University women's basketball team defeated Millersville 69-62 on the road in a matchup against one of the top teams in the PSAC East.
The Warriors (7-10, 4-7) hit nine threes on 43% shooting to keep the Marauders (11-7, 6-5) at bay. ESU only trailed for 27 seconds over four quarters of play.
Notables
Brie Droege led ESU scorers with 17 points on 50% shooting, along with five rebounds, two assists, and a block. She also made 3 of 6 three-pointers.
Emily Chmiel posted her 13th double-double of the season, scoring 10 points and grabbing 10 rebounds. Chmiel also had one steal, block, and assist.
Brooke Droege tallied 12 points while shooting 50% and grabbing two steals and a rebound.
Jessica Polin scored 11 points, including three threes, and contributed three assists and four rebounds with a steal.
Corrin Gill (pictured above) recorded a game-high four assists, grabbed four rebounds, and knocked down two threes on 67% shooting. She also had a block and a steal.
ESU has now shot better than or equal to their opponent from three-point range in its last six games.
It's the second time this season the Warriors have defeated a team that held or was tied for the top spot in the PSAC East.
How It Happened
The Warriors came out shooting, knocking down three threes in the first quarter to take a 17-12 advantage. ESU closed out the quarter on an 8-4 run led by Gill,
Brie Droege, and
Katie Geisler. In the second quarter, the three continued to drop for the Warriors as they shot 43% from beyond the arc in the first half to take a 37-33 lead.
Lacie Kringe had an important second quarter, leading the Warriors with six points.
The Marauders started the second half with a three to make it a one-point game at 9:31 in the third quarter, but from that moment, ESU responded by outscoring Millersville by 11 over the following seven minutes.
Brooke Droege (8 points),
Brie Droege (5 points), Chmiel (4 points), Gill (3 points), and Geisler (2 points) helped build the Warrior lead to 12 points. Though the Marauders were able to get two quick baskets at the end of the quarter, making the score 59-51, ESU kept control in the final quarter. Both teams limited each other's offense, preventing a potential comeback by Millersville, as ESU won 69-62.
