WILMINGTON, Del. — In a midseason break from conference play, the East Stroudsburg men's soccer team withstood a late push from Goldey-Beacom to come away with a 1-0 road win.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Warriors worked the ball up the right sideline, as Jace Seara settled a long pass near the ESU bench. Seara was able to beat two defenders down the alley to turn the corner towards the net, drawing over the center back. The sophomore shuffled it over to an open Ryan Kiernan, who beat Goldey-Beacom's Pedro Montanes to put East Stroudsburg ahead 16 minutes into the game.
- Just before halftime, the Warriors had a chance to double their lead going into the break off a corner. After a handful of clearing and shot attempts, the ball bounced over the crowd and to Bat-Od Buman-Uchral who was able to stay onside. Montanes played aggressively, charging to cut down the angle, and was able to get enough of the shot before recovering the rebound.
- The Lightning made a late push as the clock wound down to zeros, with their best opportunity coming in the final minute of play. A Goldey-Beacom defender sent a high-arching cross into the box that was punched out by Phil Sykes, but the Lightning were the first to the loose ball. After the first two shots were blocked, Sykes stopped the third from Trevor Sullivan to neutralize the danger.
NOTABLES
- This was Sykes' first career start after appearing in two matches previously this season in relief efforts. Sykes stopped all of Goldey-Beacom's six shots on goal and shut down the Lightning's six corner kick chances.
- The Lightning led in shots 8-4 with the majority of their offense coming in the second half. Goldey-Beacom recorded six shots to East Stroudsburg's one in the final 45 minutes.
- Kiernan's goal was his third of the season and seventh point, putting him in a tie with Nathan Bradway for third on the team. Seara tied Owen Rennie for the team lead in points with his second assist of the year and 12th point overall.
