ERIE, Pa. — Despite putting up two goals in the second half, it wasn't enough to overcome the four-goal deficit the Warriors found themselves in as they took their first loss of the season, 5-2, against No. 11 Gannon on Sunday afternoon. Men's Soccer now sits with a 1-1 record after the first week of the season.
HOW IT HAPPENED
• Gannon kicked off with a heavy attack, putting up four shots within the first four minutes before ESU could mount any offense. Soon after though, the Warriors charged down the field, allowing for a look from
Owen Rennie that was blocked. The Golden Knights responded by scoring their first goal of the game.
• It would be a while before either team could regain some momentum. After trading shots at the 15-minute mark, it was in the 25
th minute where Gannon found the back of the net again.
• Both teams continued showing off their offenses, each getting two shots within the next five minutes. However, the Golden Knights scored another goal in the 33
rd minute.
Jace Seara tried answering quickly with a goal just a minute later, but it was saved. It didn't take long for Gannon to get back on the attack, earning their fourth goal of the half. The Golden Knights didn't let up in the final minutes, getting off two more shots but both failed to reach the net.
• ESU started off the second half quickly with Rennie putting a shot on goal just 28 seconds in. Gannon also set the tone that they weren't letting up with the lead, putting up five straight shots within five minutes, all being saved by
Phil Sykes.
• After that sequence, the Warriors showed off their own offense, putting up two back-to-back shots. Their defense held strong and in the 65
th minute, ESU put up three more shots all in a row, but none could make it into the goal.
• In the 72
nd minute, the Warriors found themselves in a free kick situation which allowed for Rennie to finally get ESU on the board. The team followed that with a quick drive down the field, ending in
Bat-Od Buman-Uchral finding the net off an assist from
Jeter Cardona.
• Gannon was able to answer one of the goals, scoring their first goal of the half in the 78
th minute. Both defenses held strong for the remainder of the game, not allowing another goal to be scored.
GAME NOTES
• ESU was outshot 21-14 while putting up six shots on goal to the Golden Knights' 15 on goal. The goalkeeping duo of Sykes and
Gabin Meneyrol racked up five saves each.
• Rennie led the Warriors in shots, putting up five with three of them being on goal.
Joey Scalia tallied three shots while
Steven Arias and Buman-Uchral both had two.
• The whole game was filled with intensity as four different ESU players were handed yellow cards, those being Arias,
Daniel Oliveira,
Christian Gesse, and
Miguel Velez. Gannon also was handed two yellow cards.
