BLOOMSBURG, Pa. – The East Stroudsburg University women's tennis team began competition at the 2025 ITA Atlantic Region Championships Thursday at the Burt Reese Tennis Center in Bloomsburg, Pennsylvania.
Following the first day of action,
Lea Stefanovic remains in contention in the singles tournament for the Warriors.
The Warriors opened the day in doubles action, with the duo of
Jenna Kastell and
Alice Ehrenlechner taking on Ekin Ozmen and Adriana Torroba Tejada from Bluefield State. While Ozmen and Torroba Tejada won the match 8-3, the contest was much closer than the score indicated, as seven games were decided by no-advantage deuce points.
The day's singles competition saw
Ariel Kelsick face a significant challenge in the opening round, drawing the tournament's top-seeded player, Amaia Balaguer Brau of Slippery Rock. It was a tall order for Kelsick, as Balaguer Brau is also the defending regional champion. Kelsick was ultimately defeated by scores of 6-1, 6-1.
In other singles play,
Lea Stefanovic will advanced to the round of 32 after a hard-fought victory over Talia Nichols from West Virginia State University. After leading 4-3 in the first set, Stefanovic saw her opponent win three straight games to take the set 6-4. However, Stefanovic cruised in the second set with a 6-2 win and then mounted a comeback in the super tiebreaker to win the match (4-6, 6-2, 10-8) and stay alive in the tournament.
Competition at the ITA Atlantic Region Championships is set to resume Friday morning. Stefanovic will play the no. 2 ranked Sara Martinez from the University of Charleston.
