EAST STROUDSBURG, Pa. -- The East Stroudsburg women's volleyball team reverse swept Kutztown in a five-set battle inside Koehler Fieldhouse on Friday evening. The set scores were 19-25, 22-25, 25-12, 25-22, and 16-14.
The Warriors remain unbeaten at home and extend their win streak to four matches. They improved to 16-5 overall and 6-1 in the conference while Kutztown fell to 10-11 overall and 2-5 in the PSAC.
Notables
Anna Coulter had a career night posting 21 kills, 10 total blocks, and 28.5 points. Romina Martinez added 11 kills, two aces, 14 points, and three blocks. Other top contributors were Kelly Crites with 10 points and nine kills, Harry Berry with five kills and five blocks, and Allison Birtcil and Kyra Bishop who combined for eight blocks and five kills. Bishop had her second match in a row with 40+ assists, as she recorded 42 tonight.
How it happened
Set 1: Martinez scored the first point of the match with a kill before an attack error put the Warriors up, 2-0. The Golden Bears tied the match at 3 apiece, but the Warriors responded with a five point run, 8-3. Kutztown responded to that with their own six point run to take the lead at 9-8. Both teams exchanged points early on, but Kutztown pulled away by four and held steady to take the first set.
Set 2: After exchanging points throughout the set, a service error gave ESU the edge at 21–19. However, the Golden Bears finished the set with a 6-1 run.
Set 3: In the third set, Coulter scored three points and kills from Crites and Berry put the Warriors up by five, 8-3. A huge block from Berry and Birtcil at 12-6 kept the momentum going for ESU. Consecutive kills and a Kutztown attack error put ESU up by 11, their largest lead so far, 21-10. Crites' kill and two errors on the Golden Bears extended their lead to 13 points, 24-11. Kutztown made one last kill before Berry sealed the set with a hammer, 25-12.
Set 4: ESU's first eight points in the fourth set were all kills with Coulter leading with three, and both Martinez and Bishop adding two apiece. Kutztown held the lead for the beginning of the set as they jumped ahead to 19-14, with their final lead coming at 21-16. The Warriors went on an eight-point run that put them in set point position, 24-21. A service error put the ball back into Kutztown's hand, but a Coulter kill forced the fifth set.
Set 5: The fifth set began with the teams trading kills before the Golden Bears surged ahead with a five point run, 8-4. Down 7–10, the Warriors rallied behind Berry, who delivered two kills and a block to swing momentum and put ESU up by two. Birtcil followed with a kill, and an attack error pushed the Warriors to a 14–12 edge before a service miscue and Kutztown ace knotted the set at 14–14. Two huge consecutive blocks from Bishop/Coulter and Coulter/Crites gave ESU the win.
