KUTZTOWN, Pa. -- The East Stroudsburg women's volleyball team defeated Kutztown on the road in straight sets Saturday afternoon. Set scores were 25-21, 25-18, and 25-20.
The Warriors extend their win streak to five matches and this marked the sixth consecutive win over the Golden Bears. They improved to 17-5 overall and 7-1 in the conference while Kutztown fell to 10-12 overall and 2-6 in the PSAC.
Notables
Anna Coulter led the floor with 13 kills, seven blocks, and 17.5 points. Kelly Crites contributed nine kills, five service aces, and 14 points. Romina Martinez recorded seven kills, two blocks, and nine points. Kyra Bishop added 28 assists and four blocks.
How it happened
Set 1: Coulter opened the first set with three straight kills to make it 3-4. Kutztown extended its lead to four at 10-6 with a string of kills, but ESU responded to even the score at 10 apiece thanks to a service error, a service ace, and two kills from Martinez. The teams traded points back and forth with Kutztown maintaining a slight edge, until a kill from Allison Birtcil knotted the set at 20-20 , which sparked a 6-1 run that secured the first set for ESU.
Set 2: In the second set, three kills and a service ace from Coulter gave the Warriors a 5-3 lead. Two more service aces and a pair of kills from Crites extended the advantage to 9-6. Kutztown briefly regained the lead at 12-11 with a kill, but a service error evened the score at 12-12. Consecutive kills from Martinez and Coulter, both assisted by Bishop, and a kill from Crites put ESU ahead for good, 16-15. Crites followed with consecutive service aces, and another from Marta Leeland brought the Warriors to set point. A Martinez kill sealed the 25-18 win, giving ESU a two-set lead.
Set 3: In the third set, Kutztown took an early 3-2 lead before ESU went on a 6-1 run to move in front, 8-4. The Warriors maintained their advantage, though the Golden Bears closed the gap to one at 12-11 following a kill. ESU answered with three blocks to push the lead to 17-12, but Kutztown countered with a 5-1 run to pull within 21-20. The Warriors closed out the match with a kill and service ace from Crites, an attack error, and a kill from Birtcil to complete the sweep in three sets.
