MILLERSVILLE, Pa. – The No. 11 East Stroudsburg University softball team swept Millersville, winning 6-1 and 6-3 in Friday's doubleheader at Seaber Softball Stadium.
The Warriors (25-9, 9-1) rallied for a thrilling comeback win in Game 1 before piling on runs in Game 2 to complete the sweep of the Marauders (19-11, 3-7).
Pitching Highlights
Sarah Davenport (17-0) was stellar in Game 1, throwing an eight-inning complete game while allowing just one run and striking out 13. She then picked up a four-out save in Game 2 to secure the win for the Warriors.
Before Davenport closed out the nightcap,
Faith Troyer and
Abbie Landrum (4-0) combined for six innings, allowing only one earned run while striking out four to help ESU to victory.
Hitting Highlights
Delaney Ridgell gave ESU its first lead of Game 1 with a go-ahead grand slam in the top of the eighth inning. She finished the day with eight RBIs, four hits, and two home runs.
Before Ridgell's game 1 blast,
Kinsley Proepper kept ESU alive with an RBI single that drove in
Katie Master to force extra innings. Proepper totaled three hits and two RBIs on the day.
Game 1: How It Happened
Both pitching staffs kept the offenses in check until Millersville broke through with a run in the fourth inning.
Trailing in the final frame, Master sparked the ESU offense with a one-out triple and was driven in by Proepper to tie the game. In the bottom of the seventh, the Marauders threatened with runners on second and third, but Davenport escaped the jam to send the game into extras.
In the eighth,
Taylor Lipkins,
Tulana Mingin, and
Abigail Weirich reached base to load the bases for Ridgell, who crushed the first pitch to left-center field for a grand slam, giving ESU its first lead of the game. Later in the inning,
Kaitlynn Colangelo added an RBI double to drive in Proepper, sealing a 6-1 victory for the Warriors.
Game 2: How It Happened
ESU carried its offensive momentum into Game 2. Proepper and Ridgell each hit RBI singles to give the Warriors a 2-0 lead.
In the fifth, Ridgell launched her second home run of the day, a three-run shot that scored Weirich and Mingin to extend the lead to five. In the sixth, Kresley added an RBI single to drive in Lipkins, making it 6-0.
Millersville responded with three runs in the bottom of the inning to cut the deficit to 6-3. Before the Marauders could rally further, Davenport entered the game and recorded a four-out save to secure the win and complete the sweep.
