NEW ORLEANS – The U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) announced Monday that
Cole Gorham, head coach
Justin Germani and assistant coach
Jim Morrison earned major Atlantic Region awards. Gorham and Morrison both earned the same honors from the indoor season.
The last time an ESU men's outdoor athlete won the Field Athlete of the Year award was in 2013, when Matt Tholis earned the honor. Chris Merli was the last ESU assistant coach to win the outdoor Assistant Coach of the Year award, doing so in back-to-back years in 2009 and 2010.
This year,
Cole Gorham repeated as the Atlantic Region Men's Field Athlete of the Year after also earning the indoor honor.
Jim Morrison also repeated as Men's Assistant Coach of the Year, matching his award from the indoor season.
Gorham made history this outdoor season by becoming the first athlete in program history to earn two All-America honors at the same NCAA outdoor championships. He placed third in the shot put with a throw of 18.34 meters (60 feet, 2 inches) and 12th in the discus with a mark of 52.73 meters (173 feet). He concludes his Warrior career with five All-America honors—the most in program history.
Morrison coached three First-Team All-Americans on the men's side,
Chris Fredericks,
Cole Gorham and
Luke Stevenosky, and two Second-Team selections:
Anthony Voto and Gorham. On the women's side, thrower
Samiyah Little recorded an NCAA provisional mark in the hammer throw under Morrison's guidance.
Head coach
Justin Germani was named Atlantic Region Men's Coach of the Year for the first time after leading the Warriors to their first PSAC outdoor championship. ESU also tied for 14th at the NCAA Championships and finished the season ranked No. 14 nationally in the Track & Field Rating Index. Germani is the first coach in program history to earn the regional honor.
