MANHEIM, Pa. — The National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA) voted ESU Women's Wrestling as the No. 23 team in the nation in the preseason rankings as six Warriors received individual recognition on Friday.
Olivia Klein and
Ragan Retell both earned national votes for their respective weight classes. Klein was voted at the No. 5 spot in the 103-pound class, and Retell was tabbed at No. 10 for 138. Last season, Klein won the Pa. State Championships and Region Championships to qualify for nationals, finishing with a 30-10 record. Retell also earned a spot in nationals after finishing second in the regional tournament last season. Her 31-9 record was the best of any Warrior, recording 12 pins and 14 technical falls in the process.
Yianna Foufas is ranked No. 2 in the region at 110, placing behind
Teegan Sibble of Buffalo State. Foufas went 15-7 in her first season at ESU last year and won the Albion Open.
Isabella Washington-Vasquez and
Ruth Ansah earned the No. 4 rank in their weight classes. At 117, Washington-Vasquez earned a 22-13 record, with 18 of those wins coming from pins. She also placed third in the Pa. Collegiate State Championships. Though Ansah didn't compete last season, the senior comes in as a two-time national qualifier with a 38-23 record.
Jade Huerta is the last Warrior to earn votes in the individual rankings, coming in at No. 5 for the 145-pound weight class. Huerta notched nine wins last season, all coming from pins.
The Warriors begin their season on Sunday, Nov. 1, with the ESU Open. The tournament is set to begin at 9 a.m. at Koehler Fieldhouse.
