EAST STROUDSBURG, Pa. — Men's wrestling kicked off its season from Koehler Fieldhouse on Sunday with the 59^th annual ESU Open, finishing third of 33 teams. Highlighting the tournament for the Warriors was Lincoln Carlson, winning the 285 bracket.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED

• Carlson went a perfect 4-0 on the day. After advancing to the finals with a technical fall over Pitt-Johnstown's Ethan Osburn, the sophomore pinned Matthew Scott from Kutztown in just over six minutes to earn first place in the bracket.
• The other podium finisher for ESU was Lerrod Smalls in the 197-pound weight class. Smalls picked up a win by fall in the semi-finals and earned third place after a forfeit by fourth-place, Nico Gonzalez. Gonzalez powered his way to a 16-1 technical fall in the quarterfinals but dropped in the semis for a medical forfeit.
• Three other Warriors all placed sixth in their respective classes. Gavin Reynolds took an early fall in the Round of 16 but rebounded in the consolation bracket. After fighting his way all the way through the Round of Four, Reynolds took a no contest in the fifth-place match. Carmen Marano fell in the Round of 16, but also battled his way back to the fifth-place match. Layton Schmick was the other ESU wrestler to place, making the fifth-place match off a 15-0 technical fall.
