ABERDEEN, Md. — The ESU baseball team took game one against Pitt-Johnstown on Friday, with the second game set to resume tomorrow morning, opening the weekend with a 6-4 win over the Mountain Cats.
PITCHING NOTABLES
- Ryan Dewees made his second start of the season, throwing a strong six innings while only allowing two runs. Dewees struck out five and allowed only five baserunners against 25 batters faced.
- Jake Albert recorded the final out to complete the save, ESU's first of the season.
BATTING NOTABLES
- The Mountain Cats had a tough time working around Walker Zampella, as the second baseman went 1-2 with a base on balls. Zampella stole a base and hit a two-RBI double that gave the Warriors the lead for good in the third.
- Easton Albert had a pair of RBIs as well, going 1-1 and getting on base three times. Albert drew a base on balls and was hit by a pitch, but his two-run single scored the game-winning run.
- Parker Frey hit ESU's second home run of the season, sending one over the right field wall for a solo shot. He ended the day 2-3, scoring twice.
- Braydon Hubbard also had a two-hit game, splitting his four plate appearances with hits.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- After Pitt-Johnstown got on the board first off a fielder's choice in the top of the second, Parker Frey wasted no time evening the score. The first baseman led off the bottom of the inning with his 11th career home run to make it a 1-1 game.
- The Mountain Cats regained the lead their next time up, but ESU jumped ahead and would play with a lead for the rest of the game after the inning. With the bases loaded, Zampella hit a double to left field, scoring Cole Serfass and Frey. Albert, the next batter up, singled to second base and scored both Connor Reilly and Zampella to make it 5-2.
- Adding an insurance run in the next inning, Shanley Wall hit a single to right field, scoring Aidan Butz. The redshirt freshman reached on a fielder's choice, but stole second to move into scoring position earlier in the inning.
- From the fourth to the sixth inning, Dewees sat down all nine batters he faced in order. The starter recorded a strikeout in each inning, not allowing the Mountain Cats to gain ground until too late, as ESU held on to win 6-4.
GAME TWO
The second game of the doubleheader was halted due to fog in the top of the fifth inning with one out. The Mountain Cats currently lead 2-0, with play set to resume at 11 a.m.
