EAST STROUDSBURG, Pa. -- The East Stroudsburg University softball team used strong hitting to sweep St. Thomas Aquinas in Saturday's doubleheader at Creekview Park. The Warriors opened with an 8-4 win and followed it up with a decisive 13-5 victory to complete the sweep.
The Warriors are now 5-5 on the season, while the Spartans opened their season 0-2.
Game 1Â
The Warriors recorded five players with hits and combined for eight runs. Marissa Perez scored three runs, while Tulana Mingin and Delaney Ridgell each crossed the plate twice. Katie Master added one run.Â
Sarah Davenport (W, 3-2) allowed four runs on eight hits while striking out 10.Â
ESU jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning. After loading the bases with three walks, singles from Kinsley Proepper and Gigi DeMito brought in three runs. Ridgell hit her first home run of the day in the fourth inning, a two-run shot that also scored Perez, who reached on a walk. The Warriors pushed their lead to 6-0 in the fifth on Karlye Teman's RBI single that plated Master.Â
STAC scored three runs on three hits and an error in the top of the sixth.Â
The Warriors added two more runs in the sixth before STAC scored once in the seventh on three hits. Mingin singled to center and advanced on Perez's walk. She stole third and came home on a throwing error by the catcher. Perez later scored to make it 8-3.Â
Game 2Â
Maddin Grow went 4-for-4 at the plate with two runs scored and two RBIs. Kaitlynn Colangelo tallied three hits, two runs, and one RBI. Three players collected two hits apiece, and four others added one hit. Mingin scored three times, Master scored twice, and Maddy Pritchard, Ridgell, Georgia Tym, and Addison Bianco each scored once.Â
Mingin and Grow opened the first inning with singles and later scored on Megan Chroniger's two-RBI single through the right side to make it 2-0.Â
The Spartans answered in the second, taking a 3-2 lead with three runs on four hits and an error.Â
ESU responded in the bottom half with four runs on four hits to regain the lead, 6-3. Tym's RBI triple scored Pritchard, and Ridgell followed with a three-run homer that brought home Grow and Mingin.Â
STAC used two hits and two errors to score twice in the third, cutting the deficit to 6-5.Â
In the fourth, Tym and Mingin reached on errors and later scored on singles by Grow and Proepper to extend the lead to 8-5.Â
Master opened the fifth with a home run, followed by consecutive singles from Colangelo and Pritchard. Mingin and Grow each drove in a run with singles, pushing the score to 11-5.Â
In the sixth, Master doubled and scored on Colangelo's double to right-center. Pritchard's single moved Colangelo to third, and she later scored on a fielder's choice to seal the 13-5 victory.Â
