NEW ORLEANS – East Stroudsburg University high jump standout Shannon Harnett was named the Atlantic Region Women's Field Athlete of the Year and assistant coach Karen Gaita was named the Atlantic Region Women's Assistant Coach of the Year when the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Association (USTFCCCA) released its indoor regional awards on Monday.
Harnett finished runner-up in the high jump at the NCAA DII Indoor Championships, clearing 1.79m (5-10 ½) to break a 49-year-old PSAC record. Earlier in the season, Harnett scored 21 points in field events at the PSAC Indoor Championships, winning the high jump, placing third in the triple jump and fourth in the long jump.
Gaita coached the Warriors' high jumpers to earn two First Team All-America honors at the NCAA DII Indoor Championships, led by the runner-up finish by Shannon Harnett. Harnett's clearance of 1.79m (5-10 ½) broke PSAC and program records that were first set in 1977.
