STROUDSBURG, Pa. — The ESU baseball team opened up its four-game home series against D'Youville Saturday afternoon with two wins, outscoring the Saints 17-1.
PITCHING NOTABLES
- The Warriors had outstanding pitching to limit D'Youville to just one run across both games, beginning with their starters, Ryan Dewees and Ethan Woods. Dewees picked up his fourth win of the year, improving to 4-0, striking out 10 batters over 6.0 IP. In the second game, Woods got his first win of the season, throwing 6.0 IP as well, only facing 22 batters while keeping the Saints off the scoreboard.
- ESU only used one bullpen pitcher in each game to relieve its starter, with Evan Kovalcik closing out the first game and Caden Leonard coming in in the second. Neither allowed a hit, as Kovalcik finished with one strikeout, and Leonard struck out the side.
BATTING NOTABLES
- Troy Davis led the team with four hits on the day, going 2-2 with a walk in the first game and 2-3 in the second. He ended the day with one RBI and scored once himself.
- Easton Albert and Ryan Manning each finished the doubleheader with a three-RBI game. Albert did his damage in the first game, going 2-4 while also stealing a base. Manning drove in one run on a fielder's choice to start the second game, then drove in two more on a triple later on.
- Parker Frey and Cole Serfass also finished with a multi-hit game each to begin the series. Both went 2-4 with a double and a single, with Frey adding an RBI and Serfass bringing home two.
GAME ONE
- After a scoreless first inning on the mound from Dewees, ESU got the bats going, scoring in the first inning for the fourth-straight game. Walker Zampella got on base with a walk, stealing second to give Frey a runner in scoring position. Frey hit a single to center field, scoring Zampella to give ESU the early 1-0 lead.
- Dewees went back to work in the top of the second, recording all three outs by strikeout. He worked out of a jam with runners on the corners after a walk and a single, but stranded both Saints.
- The Warriors got a little bit of breathing room in the bottom of the third, adding two more to their score. After Serfass got on base with a single, Frey hit a high fly ball to center field that bounced over the wall for a ground rule double. In the next at-bat, Manning hit a sacrifice fly to right field that advanced both runners. With Frey now 90 feet away from the plate, Davis chopped a ground ball that made it past the pitcher into a dead spot in the infield between the shortstop and second baseman, reaching safely and adding the extra insurance run.
- ESU's offense began to click with its production in the third, scoring two runs each time up for the remainder of the game. In the bottom of the fourth with Braydon Hubbard and Zampella on base, Serfass doubled to center field, driving home two more runs.
- Davis led off the bottom of the fifth for ESU with a walk, stealing both second and third base to set up Albert's RBI single to left field. After a base on balls to Zander Condeelis, Albert stole third base, and both runners moved up 90 feet on a balk.
- Dewees finished his outing with a routine sixth inning, striking out his final two batters faced. He recorded two or more strikeouts in four of his six innings on the day. In the bottom half of the inning, Manning and Aidan Butz both hit singles to centerfield, then pulled off a double steal to give Albert two runners in scoring position. Albert delivered with a single to left field, giving the Warriors their final two runs and making it 9-1.
GAME TWO
- After two routine innings to start the game for both sides' starting pitchers, the Warriors' bats came alive in the bottom of the third. Condeelis got the inning started with a single down the right field line, moving to second base after Hubbard drew a walk. Zampella hit a hard ground ball past the shortstop into left field, bringing home one run. Serfass was hit by a pitch in the next at-bat, loading the bases. Frey and Manning then went back-to-back with RBI fielder's choices, making it 3-0.
- The majority of ESU's offense in the second game came in consecutive innings, as the Warriors put the game out of reach in the bottom of the fourth. Albert started the inning with a single and got to second on Condeelis' ground out. With Hubbard up next, he hit a ball off the right field wall, as Albert only made it to third, making sure the ball would drop safely. The next four batters all had productive at-bats, as Zampella hit a sacrifice fly, Serfass singled to center field, and Frey pulled a double into right field to extend the Warriors' lead to 7-0.
- After Woods finished his sixth inning of shutout pitching to complete his outing, the Warriors added one more run for good measure. Zampella led off the bottom of the inning with a walk, stealing second in the next at-bat. Christian Maccarrone pinch hit for Serfass, getting on base with a walk before both runners advanced on a passed ball. Ryland Yinger entered the game in place of Manning, tallying an RBI off a sacrifice fly that plated Zampella. Leonard then came in and retired all three batters he faced by strikeout in 15 total pitches to end the game.
