STROUDSBURG, Pa. — The ESU baseball team picked up two wins to start their weekend series for the second-straight week, defeating Mansfield 7-4 and 4-2 at Creekview Park.
PITCHING NOTABLES
- Ryan Dewees got things going in game one for ESU on the mound, picking up his fourth win of the season, improving to 4-2. He went 6.0 IP, striking out nine while only allowing one earned run.
- Johansel Brito got his second career save after picking up his first last weekend, closing the game in the top of the seventh. He struck out one batter to preserve the win.
- Ethan Woods got his third win of the season to move to 3-3. Going 4.0 IP, he struck out seven while allowing two earned runs.
- Cole Dymek entered the game in the top of the fifth, throwing three scoreless innings for his longest outing of the season. He struck out one Mountaineer while only allowing two hits to keep ESU in front.
BATTING NOTABLES
- Parker Frey had a good day at the plate, going 3-4 between the two games. He scored five runs total himself, driving in one RBI in the first game as well.
- Chase Frantz got the nod at DH for the second game, taking advantage of the opportunity with a 2-3 day. He recorded one RBI as well with his two singles.
- Zander Condeelis was the other Warrior to finish with a multi-RBI game, going 1-2 with a walk in game one. He did so with a single and a bases-loaded walk, reaching base safely twice.
GAME ONE
- Through the first six Mansfield batters, Dewees faced the minimum after the top of the second. He got out of the top of the first with a 5-4-3 double play after a one-out walk, then closed the second inning with his first strikeout of the day.
- ESU got on the board in the bottom of the second, opening the inning with Frey, Troy Davis, and Connor Reilly drawing three straight walks. Christian Maccarrone reached on a fielder's choice, scoring Frey as Davis advanced to third base. Condeelis hit a single and advanced to second base in the next at-bat to right field, getting Davis home and moving Maccarrone to third base. Ryan Manning pinch-hit mid at-bat for Braydon Hubbard, doubling to left field. Maccarrone scored easily, but a close play at the plate went the Mountaineers' way to end the inning and limit ESU's damage to three runs.
- The Warriors added to their lead next time up, with Walker Zampella getting to third base after a leadoff single, a stolen base, and then moving to third base off a groundout to the second baseman. Frey came up with one out, swinging on the first pitch he saw, and singling to right-center field. Later, with two outs, Reilly doubled to left-center field, putting him and Frey in scoring position. Maccarrone was hit by a pitch to load the bases, and Condeelis drew a 4-1 base on balls to put ESU up 5-0.
- Mansfield started the top of the fourth with a leadoff single up the middle, but that's as much production as they'd get off Dewees in the inning. He struck out the next three batters, bringing his total up to that point to six.
- ESU poured it on the bottom of the fourth, pushing its lead to seven. With two outs, Cole Serfass reached on a single to put a runner on the basepaths for Frey. He hit a grounder that forced Garrett Emerick to come off the mound to field, throwing it off target to first base, allowing Serfass to score all the way from first. Frey stayed at first but stole second base during Davis' at-bat, and then he singled to left field, bringing Frey home from second.
- Mansfield broke up the shutout bid in the top of the sixth, stringing together three singles from Kahale Burns, Slade McTigue, and Peter Tadic, bringing Burns home to make it 7-1 in Dewees' final inning.
- After Mansfield loaded the bases with no outs in the top of the seventh, ESU called Brito in to preserve the lead. Mansfield scored two runs off a groundout and a sacrifice fly, adding a third after Tadic singled to center field to make it 7-4. With the tying run at the plate, Brito struck out Billy Riggs to end the game.
GAME TWO
- ESU got the scoring started in the bottom of the second again in game two, as Frey got on base with a one-out single. He moved into scoring position after Frantz took a passed ball, and then Frantz scored him with a single through the left side.
- This time, Mansfield had an immediate response, tying the game in the top of the third. Brinden Floyd got the first hit of the game for Mansfield, narrowly beating out a throw from a moving Easton Albert at shortstop. Woods struck out Tanner Hoffman for the inning's first out, but a double by Burns and single by Ryan Sekulski would tie the game and put runners on the corners. Woods got out of the trouble by striking out McTigue for the second out, then getting a groundout to end the inning.
- ESU went back out in front in the bottom of the third, getting runners on first and second base with two walks to Condeelis and Davis. A flyout by Albert moved Condeelis up to third base, and Zampella hit a single to left field to bring him home for a 2-1 lead.
- The Mountaineers would erase their deficit again in the top of the fourth, putting two runners on base with walks between two strikeouts. Tanner Hoffman was able to score Nick Ledger with a two-out single, tying the game.
- For the third-straight inning, ESU scored one run in the bottom of the fourth to take the lead. Reilly and Frantz opened the inning with singles to the outfield, and Reilly got to third base after Ryan Manning was robbed at the wall by Hoffman. Condeelis hit a ground ball to the shortstop, getting the out at second base, but a throwing error by Cooper Rother allowed him to reach first base and drive in Reilly.
- Mansfield threatened in the top of the sixth inning, as the Mountaineers loaded the bases with two outs. After an eight-pitch at-bat for Hoffman resulted in a walk, Dymek got Burns to foul out to Condeelis at third base on the first pitch to keep the score 3-2.
- Looking for some extra insurance, Frey started the bottom of the sixth with a single through the middle. He was kept at first base after the Mountaineers got two strikeouts, bringing Manning up to bat. He fought off a pitch that floated over first base into the outfield, and on an awkward play, the ball went off Ledger's glove to hit the ground. Frey never stopped running, scoring easily from first base.
- Dymek remained in the game for the seventh inning, shutting the door on Mansfield by retiring the side in order for his second save of the season.
