STROUDSBURG, Pa. -- The East Stroudsburg University softball team earned a doubleheader sweep over Shepherd on Saturday, powered by Sarah Davenport's standout performance. Davenport threw a perfect game in the first game and followed it up with six strikeouts in game two.
The Warriors improved to 23-13 overall and 11-7 in conference play.
Notables
Sarah Davenport threw her first perfect game of the season and third of her career, striking out 12 batters. Davenport also pitched game two, allowing just two hits while striking out six to move to 14-6 on the year.
Game 1
Delaney Ridgell went a perfect 3-for-3 at the plate, batting in two runs and scoring once. Tulana Mingin, Kinsley Proepper, and Marissa Perez each added two hits, with Mingin and Perez scoring twice. Maddin Grow and Megan Chroniger each contributed a hit and a run.
The Warriors got on the board in the bottom of the first. Consecutive singles from Grow, Ridgell, and Proepper loaded the bases before a groundout scored Grow, 1-0.
The Warriors broke the game open in the second inning, plating four runs to build a 5-0 lead. Karlye Teman drew a walk, stole second, and moved to third on a throwing error before scoring on Perez's RBI single to right. Perez later stole second and advanced to third on Mingin's single down the left field line. A sacrifice fly from Grow brought Perez home, and consecutive hits by Ridgell and Proepper added two more runs.
Davenport notched her 10th strikeout of the game to end the top of the fourth.
ESU added to its lead in the bottom half of the inning, scoring four runs on four hits and an error to make it 9-0. Perez and Mingin led off with singles and advanced on a sacrifice bunt before Perez scored on a wild pitch. Ridgell followed with an RBI single to bring in Mingin. Macy Crum then entered as a pinch runner, stole second, and scored on Chroniger's double to center. Chroniger later crossed the plate on an error off Master's at-bat, capping the scoring.
Davenport sealed the win with two strikeouts in the fifth, completing a perfect game in a five-inning, run-rule victory.
Game 2
The second game remained scoreless until the sixth inning, when Mingin singled to left center and later scored on Grow's RBI double to left center, giving ESU a 1-0 lead.
