Jon Schnaars has been named to the Associated Press Little All-America first team, his third All-America selection this fall, it was released Thursday.
Schnaars (Harrisburg, Pa./Central Dauphin) is the 21st ESU player to be named AP Little All-America and the ninth to earn a spot on the first team. He is the Warriors' first AP Little All-America since linebacker Matt Freed was recognized from 2008-10, and the first Warrior on the first team since punter Nick Krut in 2008.
The AP Little All-America team includes players from NCAA Division II and Division III and NAIA institutions.
Schnaars was previously named to the AFCA (American Football Coaches Association) All-America team last week, and the D2CCA (Division II Conference Commissioners Association) All-America team, selected by DII's sports information directors, earlier this week.
The PSAC is represented by five players - Schnaars, Slippery Rock offensive lineman Cory Tucker and Kutztown offensive lineman Jordan Morgan on the first team; West Chester defensive lineman Andrew Cohen on the second team; and Shippensburg all-purpose player (WR/KR) Sheldon Mayer on the third team.
Schnaars led DII wide receivers in receptions (10.4 per game), yards (146.4 ypg) and touchdowns (22), pulling in 114 catches for 1,610 yards, in 11 games this season.
He leads all NCAA (DI FBS, DI FCS, DII and DIII) wide receivers with 22 TD entering the Division I FBS bowl season and the latter stages of the DI FCS, DII and DIII postseason. He is tied with Cooper Kupp (Eastern Washington, DI FCS) with 10.4 receptions per game, and second to Kupp (149.3 ypg) in receiving yards per game, among all NCAA players.
Schnaars' season ranks in the top 15 in DII history in all three major receiving categories, ranking 10th in receptions (114), 15th in yards (1,610) and tied for seventh in receiving TD (22). He is second in receptions, third in yards and tied for second in TD in PSAC history.
He set an ESU record for single-season receptions, breaking the previous mark of 88 in 14 games set by Evan Prall in 2005. His 1,610 receiving yards are second behind Prall's 1,766 yards, and his 22 receiving TD are second behind Prall's 23.
Schnaars set ESU's career record for receptions (239), ranks third in yards (3,447) and second in TD (45) - ranking in the top 10 in PSAC history in all three categories (5th in receptions, 8th in yards and t-5th in TD).
Schnaars and redshirt senior quarterback
Matt Soltes helped ESU rank second in DII in passing offense (361.5 ypg) this season. Soltes led DII in passing yards per game (354.5) and passing TD (41) and ranked second in total offense (373.6) in the regular season.
Soltes is a finalist for the Harlon Hill Trophy, DII's player of the year award, which will be announced Friday afternoon. He was also named the Super Region 1 Offensive Player of the Year and PSAC East Offensive Athlete of the Year.
Schnaars had 100 yards receiving in nine of 11 games, including three 200-yard games. He set PSAC records with 20 catches and seven TD and had 218 yards in a 69-67 (5OT) loss vs. Shippensburg, had nine catches for 200 yards and two TD in a 56-12 win vs. Edinboro and 16 catches for 222 yards and four TD in a 49-37 win vs. Gannon in the final game of the season.
He had seven catches for 125 yards and the go-ahead two-point conversion with 1:10 remaining in ESU's 35-34 win vs. Bloomsburg, its first over the Huskies since 2005.
He had five games with at least 10 catches, and eight games with at least nine receptions, including a streak of 9+ catches in six straight games.
Schnaars was previously named to the All-PSAC East second team in 2014 with 58 catches, 807 yards and 14 TD.
Academically, he is a two-time Academic All-America selection and was named to the first team this season. He was also a national semifinalist for the National Football Foundation's Campbell Trophy.
Schnaars, quarterback Jason Vander Laan (Ferris State) and kicker Brent Wahle (Ohio Dominican) were the only players named to the AFCA All-America team and Academic All-America first team this season.
Schnaars is the third ESU wide receiver named to an All-America team, joining Evan Prall (2005-06) and Mike Mancuso (1996-97).
Schnaars and Prall (1st team 2005, 1st team all-purpose 2006) are the only ESU receivers named to the AP Little All-America team.
