KUTZTOWN – Senior Negus Graham broke the school record in the 500m dash and was one of 12 individual winners as East Stroudsburg University opened the second semester of indoor track and field on Friday night at the Kutztown Invitational.
Graham's time of 1:05.38 was more than seven-tenths of a second faster than the previous record of 1:06.10 set by Mark Stinson in 2003. Graham holds school records both indoors and outdoors in the 400m and was an All-American in both events last year and is also a member of four school-record relay teams.
Two Warriors reached NCAA provisional qualifying marks in winning their events, senior Trina Carito in the pentathlon and senior Lynn Mayer in the high jump.
Carito had a career-best 3,519 points, breaking her mark of 3,498 to win last year's PSAC championship which ranked 12th in Division II. Mayer cleared 5-8 to better her provisional mark of 5-6 in the season opener at Lehigh. The mark is the third-best in Division II this season for the four-time All-American and runner-up indoors last year.
Other winners for the Warriors were freshman Rachel Pierantozzi in the 55m (7.49), senior Jasmine Johnson in the 500m (1:21.64), sophomore Corinne Fitzgerald in the mile (5:17.74), sophomore Lauren Ventrella in the 55m hurdles (8.74), junior Ian Melhorn in the 55m (6.60) and 200m (22.54), sophomore Mike Saparito in the 1000m (2:37.54), sophomore Amr Aldeen in the mile (4:25.68), sophomore Corey Young in the 55m hurdles (7.84) and junior Dan Johnson in the heptathlon (4,500 points).
ESU also won both the men's and women's 4x800m relays by more than 20 seconds. Sophomore Bridget McCarron, freshmen Kim Wernerspach and Kim Lowry and Fitzgerald won the women's race in 10:12.20, and the men's team of Saparito, junior Sam Janssen, Graham and senior Chris Zadroga ran a time of 8:21.00.
Melhorn and senior Asher Ashfield finished one-two in the men's 55m, Ashfield was fourth in the 200m, freshman Keith Parker-Washington placed second in the 400m and senior Greg Pammer was second to Graham in the 500m to lead the men's sprinters. The 4x400m relay of senior Greg Pammer, freshman Kyle Touhy, Parker-Washington and Young was second in 3:29.54 and Zadroga placed second in the mile.
In the men's field events, sophomore Kyle Soden was second in the high jump (6-3) and freshman James Homola was third in the pole vault (14-4 1/2). Soden also tied for third in the finals of the 55m hurdles in 7.93.
Pierantozzi won the women's 55m dash after tying for second in the prelims and placed fifth in the 200m (28.08). Sophomore Lauren Hannan also made the final in the 55m dash and was sixth in 7.81.
Ventrella, last year's PSAC hurdles champion running in her first meet of year following the field hockey season, led three Warriors who made the final in the 55m hurdles. Senior Brittany Knowles placed fourth and sophomore Aniyah Williams was fifth.
In the high jump, junior Devyn Emerich finished second behind Mayer with a mark of 5-3. Freshman Laura Beimfohr was second in the pole vault at 10-10 after setting the school record of 11-0 1/4 in her first collegiate meet last semester. Senior Jackie Berthelsen led the women's throwers, finishing third in the shot put (38-5 1/4). Freshman Elizabeth Madden was fourth in the weight throw (40-0 3/4).
ESU's next action will come next Saturday at the Bucknell Heptagonal in Lewisburg.
