NEW YORK, N.Y. – Sophomore Mike Saparito (800m), freshman Laura Beimfohr (pole vault) and the women's 4x400m relay team all set school records as East Stroudsburg University competed at the Lafayette-Rider Winter Games on Friday night at the Armory in New York City.
Senior Trina Carito ran the anchor leg on the record-setting 4x400m relay team and just missed a fourth school record, coming within two-hundredths of a second of the 10-year old record in the 500m held by Shavanna Ross. Carito ran a time of 1:17.54, knocking more than two seconds off her personal best entering the meet.
The 4x400 squad ran an NCAA Division II provisional time of 3:53.73 to lower the school record from 3:55.38. Freshman Nicole Brown, senior Jasmine Johnson and sophomore Tara Getz ran the first three legs and Carito anchored as the Warriors broke the mark set by Jen Eye, Cheryl Griffin, Angela Gray and Ross in 2001.
Beimfohr was one of three individual winners for the Warriors, clearing 11-3 3/4 to break the record of 11-0 that she set twice in her first five collegiate meets. ESU and Texas A&M-Kingsville were the only two Division II programs to compete in the large-school division of the invitational.
Senior Lynn Mayer won the women's high jump with a mark of 5-8 3/4, a half-inch off her NCAA Division II automatic mark that tied the school record earlier this year. Freshman Corey Kresge tied for first in the men's long jump at 22-5 1/4.
Saparito's time of 1:54.52 in the 800m on the Armory's banked track broke the 27-year old record of 1:54.94 set by Brian McClanahan in 1984. Saparito was fifth and senior Mahmoud Aldeen was 10th in 1:56.79, also a top 10 time in school history.
Senior Negus Graham, a returning All-American in the 400m, finished second and lowered his NCAA Division II provisional time to 48.12 seconds after running 48.83 on the same track a week ago. The 4x400m relay of freshman Keith Parker-Washington, junior Ian Melhorn, senior Greg Pammer and Graham finished third, running the second-fastest time in school history, 3:18.58, which was eight-hundredths off the NCAA provisional standard.
Sophomore Corinne Fitzgerald, who ran a 15-second PR in the 3000m last week at the Armory, had an NCAA Division II provisional time of 17:30.03 in the 5000m that stands as the third-fastest time by an ESU runner. Fitzgerald finished second in the race that was run in the afternoon session of the meet.
Four freshmen also had standout performances on the track that place them in ESU's top 10. Brown ran the 200m in 26.29, Parker-Washington had a time of 50.16 in the men's 400m, Christopher Walker ran the Warriors' second-fastest time in the men's 500m in 1:06.06, and Kim Wernerspach laid down a time of 5:17.08 in the women's mile. Freshmen Bridget McCarron and Kim Lowry also had strong times in the women's 800m.
Two veterans, Johnson and sophomore Lauren Ventrella, ran PSAC qualifying times in the 200m (25.72) and 60m dash (8.31), respectively. Johnson was second in the 200m and 400m and Ventrella won the 60m hurdles and was third in the 60m dash at last year's PSAC Championships.
Other highlights included a career-best mark of 14-9 by freshman James Homola in the pole vault, freshman Rachel Pierantozzi's time of 8.21 seconds in the 60m dash, and Kresge's win in the long jump. The freshman shared the title with Ronald Woodley of Rhode Island.
The Warriors will compete at the Mark Deneault Invitational at Cornell next Saturday in their final tune-up for the PSAC Indoor Track & Field Championships, which will be hosted by Edinboro on February 26-27.
