KUTZTOWN – Sophomore Mike Saparito ran a career-best in the men's 800m and senior Jasmine Johnson had a season-best in the women's 400m to lead nine individual winners for East Stroudsburg University at the Kutztown Last Chance Meet on Saturday.
Saparito, the defending PSAC indoor champion in the 800, ran a time of 1:54.23 that ranks fourth in school history as the Warriors tuned up for the PSAC Outdoor Championships, which will be held Thursday through Saturday at Slippery Rock.
Johnson's time of 57.16 in the 400 is the third-fastest in the PSAC this season. The senior is a four-time runner-up at the PSAC Championships and was second in the 200 and third in the 400 outdoors last year.
Other winners were senior Asher Ashfield in the 100 (10.85), junior Ian Melhorn in the 200 (21.66), senior Negus Graham in the 400 (48.41), sophomore Cory Young in the 110m hurdles (15.21), freshman Christopher Walker in the 400m hurdles (55.95), freshman Kim Wernerspach in the 1500 (4:51.88) and sophomore Bridget McCarron in the 3000 (10:23.99).
The men's 4x100m relay of Ashfield, freshman Keith Parker-Washington, Graham and Melhorn won in 41.43 and the women's 4x400m relay of freshman Nicole Brown, Johnson, sophomore Tara Getz and freshman Colleen Murphy was second in 3:54.36.
Pammer ran a career-best of 22.20 to finish third behind Melhorn in the 200 and Ashfield was fourth in 22.45. In the 800, junior Sam Janssen (1:56.16) and senior Mahmoud Aldeen (1:57.13) had season-bests to follow up Saparito's PR. Sophomore Amr Aldeen had a season-best of 3:59.05 in the 1500.
In the men's field events, sophomore Kyle Soden was second in the high jump at 6-2 3/4, freshman Cory Kresge was third in the long jump (21-10 1/4) and freshman Nate Horn was fourth in the long jump (21-2) and triple jump (40-9 1/2).
On the women's side, McCarron's time of 10:23.99 in the 3000 moves her into ninth on ESU's all-time Top 10. Wernerspach won the 1500 and was third in the 800 at 2:25.49 and freshman Kim Lowry was second in the 3000m steeplechase in 11:41.20.
In the sprints and hurdles, sophomore Lauren Hannan ran a season-best 13.07 to finish second in the 100m dash and sophomore Lauren Ventrella had a season-best 15.60 to place second in the 110m hurdles.
Freshman Laura Beimfohr tied for second in the pole vault at 10-6 and junior Devyn Emerich was second in the high jump at 5-2 1/4. Junior Adrienne Dieter and sophomore Aniyah Williams both competed in the long jump for the first time in their careers at ESU and tied for third with PSAC-qualifying marks of 16-8.
Senior Danielle Laws led the throwers with a second-place finish in the discus (121-7) and was sixth in the hammer (145-10). Senior Jackie Berthelsen was fourth in the shot put (37-7 3/4) and fifth in the discus (111-8) and sophomore Arielle Williamson was third in the javelin (114-0).
