Warriors Track & Field Tunes Up for PSAC Championships at Susquehanna Open

SELINSGROVE – East Stroudsburg University won 10 individual events, one relay and had three NCAA Division II provisional qualifiers as the Warriors completed the indoor track and field regular season on Friday night at the Susquehanna Open.

ESU also had nine new qualifiers for the PSAC Championships, which will be held next weekend (February 23-24) at Edinboro. All nine were previously qualified in other events - senior Lauren Ventrella and junior Brittany Jones in the 200m, seniors Corinne Fitzgerald and Rose Mascoli in the 5000m, junior Elizabeth Madden in the shot put, junior Chris Schneider and senior James Romano in the mile, and senior Frank Fezza and sophomore Chris Ott in the 5000m.

NCAA provisional qualifiers were sophomore Danielle Smith in the 60m dash (7.75), sophomore Damien Boham in the 400m (49.74) and senior Mike Saparito in the 800m (1:55.22). Smith's time was two-hundredths of a second off her school record set last season.

Individual winners were Smith in the 60m dash, Fitzgerald in the 5K (17:58.78), Ventrella in the 60m hurdles (9.02), sophomore Christina O'Connor in the high jump (5-7 3/4), Madden in the weight throw (51-2 3/4), sophomore Brandon Mercer in the 60m dash (7.10), Boham in the 400m, Fezza in the 5000m (15:34.37), freshman Seth Bailey in the high jump (6-6) and sophomore Travis Toth in the weight throw (55-7 3/4).

The men's 4x400m relay (junior Keith Parker-Washington, freshman William Berry, Boham and Saparito) won in a time of 3:23.77.

ESU took three of the top five spots in the women's 60m dash in Smith, junior Rachel Pierantozzi (7.99) and Jones (8.02). Ventrella (26.40) and Jones (26.71) were second and third in the 200m, and sophomore Imani Rosario (2:22.15) and junior Kim Wernerspach (2:22.39) were fourth and fifth in the 800m.

Fitzgerald and Mascoli (19:04.80) went 1-2 in the women's 5000m. In the field events, junior Laura Beimfohr was second in the pole vault (11-5 3/4) and freshman Julia Molloy was third (10-0), along with winning marks from O'Connor in the high jump and Madden in the weight throw, where she matched her season-best.

The 4x400m relay of Smith, senior Aniyah Williams, Rosario and Ventrella placed second in 4:05.00.

In the men's sprints, Mercer and freshman Mark Burgess (7.11) were 1-2 in the 60m dash, and Burgess was fourth in the 200m (23.22).

Boham took the 400m, breaking his previous PR of 49.99, and Saparito was second in the 800m. Schneider (4:21.85) was fourth in the mile and Romano (4:25.51) was eighth, both with PSAC qualifying times. Fezza won the 5000m, Ott was second (15:52.92) and senior Mike Pereira was fourth (15:56.65).

The Warriors swept the top three spots in the men's high jump in Bailey (6-6), Berry (6-4) and sophomore Donovan Tolbert (6-4). Freshman Corey Smith was fourth in the pole vault at 13-11 1/4.

Toth won the weight and was followed by sophomores Mike Smith (50-9 1/4), Joseph Thieme (49-8 1/4) and Casey Ciaston (48-10), who were fifth through seventh.
