LEXINGTON, Va. - Senior Matt Tholis (javelin) and sophomore Travis Toth (hammer) both hit NCAA Division II provisional qualifying marks and East Stroudsburg University won seven individual events and two relays in its outdoor track and field opener on Friday and Saturday at the Washington & Lee Invitational.
Tholis, a returning All-American, recorded a mark of 197-4 in his first competition since placing seventh at last year's NCAA Division II Championships.
Toth hit the NCAA provisional mark at 182-3 in the hammer, the second-best mark in school history. He was just at the cut line in the weight throw for the NCAA Indoor Championships this winter.
Sophomore Danielle Smith, coming off PSAC indoor titles in the 60m and 200m and the defending outdoor 100m and 200m champion, won both events this weekend. She ran 12.25 in the 100 and 25.09 in the 200.
Junior Kim Wernerspach won the 5000m in 17:41.81 in her first competition at that distance. Freshman Tirzah Johnson won the triple jump at 36-10 1/4.
The Warriors' women also won the 4x100m and 4x400m relays. Junior Rachel Pierantozzi, senior Lauren Ventrella, junior Brittany Jones and Smith ran 48.81 in the 4x100, and Ventrella, Wernerspach, Smith and sophomore Imani Rosario ran 4:00.47 in the 4x400.
ESU's men won three individual events with Tholis in the javelin, sophomore Damien Boham in the 400m and senior James Romano in the 10,000m.
Boham, the PSAC indoor runner-up in the 400, won in 48.91. Romano took the 10K in 32:14.17.
Overall, ESU athletes recorded 41 PSAC qualifying marks (23 men, 18 women).
Sophomore Christina O'Connor, coming off her first career All-America honor in the high jump at the NCAA Indoor Championships, was second and tied her 2012 outdoor season best at 5-5 3/4.
Junior Rachel Pierantozzi was third in both the 100m (12.59) and 200m (25.84). The Warriors had five of the top six in the 100 in Smith, Pierantozzi, Johnson (t-4th, 12.94), Jones (t-4th, 12.94) and senior Angel Gaffney (12.96). Jones was also sixth in the 200 in 26.48.
In the women's 10K, senior Corinne Fitzgerald was third with a PR of 36:48.93, the sixth-fastest in school history. Senior Rose Mascoli was fourth in 37:23.03. Rosario was sixth in the 800m in 2:20.88.
Also on the track, Ventrella was third in the 100m hurdles (15.12) and senior Julie Granteed was fifth in 15.48, a PR and the ninth-fastest time on ESU's list.
The Warriors were second in the 4x800m relay with freshman Heather Spadola, Rosario, sophomore Gabrielle Gombos and Wernerspach finishing in 9:55.78.
Johnson was sixth in the long jump (16-6) along with her win in the triple jump and performance in the 100m dash.
Junior Theresa Horn was sixth (3,715) and senior Aniyah Williams was 10th (3,536) in the women's heptathlon.
The Warriors' men were led by the NCAA provisional marks from Tholis and Toth, along with Boham and Romano on the track.
Junior Keith Parker-Washington was fifth in both the 100 (11.13) and 200 (21.97 - PR, ESU's #8 time). Sophomore Brandon Mercer was seventh in the 100 in 11.29.
Senior Mike Saparito was second in the 800 in 1:53.56, just over a half-second off his school record. Junior Chris Schneider was second in the 1500 (3:59.21) with Saparito finishing seventh (4:03.91).
Senior Frank Fezza was sixth in the 5K with a PR of 14:59.08, the ninth-fastest in school history. Senior Mike Pereira followed Romano (32:14.17) in the 10K, placing sixth in 32:46.09.
Senior Kyle Soden was second in the high jump (6-6 1/4), freshman Seth Bailey was tied for third (6-4 1/4) and freshman William Berry was sixth (6-2 1/4). Soden was fourth in the 110m hurdles (15.81) and freshman Dmitri Mobley was fifth in the 110 hurdles (15.83) and the 400m hurdles (57.42).
Sophomore Donovan Tolbert was second in the triple jump at 44-11 1/2.
In the javelin, Tholis won at 197-4 and redshirt senior Josh Hontz, the national runner-up in 2011, was fifth at 174-10 in his first competition since that spring after taking a redshirt last year.
Freshman Eric Conard was fourth in the decathlon (5,568) and senior Andrew Sloves was fifth (5,566).
In the men's relays, the Warriors were second in the 4x4 (3:20.76), third in the 4x1 (42.49) and fourth in the 4x8 (8:12.83).
