EAST STROUDSBURG – Senior 800m standout Mike Saparito and freshman high jumper William Berry both hit NCAA Division II provisional qualifying standards, and East Stroudsburg University athletes earned five of the 14 meet records that fell on Saturday at the Warriors' 8th Annual All-American Meet at Eiler-Martin Stadium.
The Warriors also won eight individual events and one relay in their only home meet of the outdoor season and turned in strong performances across the board.
Saparito ran 1:51.97 in the 800, breaking his school record of 1:52.96 from 2011 and the meet and Eiler-Martin Stadium record of 1:52.98 set by Messiah's Tyler Newhook that same year. He also anchored the 4x400m relay to a victory in the final event of the afternoon.
Berry cleared 6-8 3/4 in the high jump, tying the meet record set by Kutztown's Cody Hartzler in 2009. His mark is sixth-best in school history and is one of six NCAA provisional or automatic qualifiers for the Warriors so far this outdoor season.
Senior Matt Tholis set a meet record in the javelin at 216-2, his fourth straight mark over 210-0 this spring. He ranks second in DII with an automatic qualifying mark of 226-5 at Lafayette on March 30. Tholis broke his own meet record of 205-8 from last year.
The Warriors also set meet records in men's and women's 3000m. Senior Corinne Fitzgerald ran 10:12.17 to tie the women's record first set by Kutztown's Stephanie Williams in 2007, and senior Frank Fezza ran 8:54.72 to lower the record of 8:56.24 set by teammate Chris Schneider in 2011.
Other winning performances came from junior Kim Lowry in the 5000m (19:13.45), sophomore Christina O'Connor in the high jump (5-5 3/4 – ties outdoor career-best) and sophomore Kirsten Muhaw in the pole vault (11-1 3/4).
The men's 4x400m relay of sophomore Kyle Rickard, junior Keith Parker-Washington, sophomore Damien Boham and Saparito won in 3:21.03.
Boham ran a time of 1:54.80, ESU's 10th-best all-time, to finish fourth behind Saparito in the 800m invitational run, the meet's premier event.
There were four stadium records, including Saparito's 1:51.97. Melika Lewis (Monroe College) ran 12.02 in the women's 100m dash, Monroe ran a time of 47.68 in the women's 4x100m relay, and Abraham Hall (Army Prep) ran 10.49 to break ESU standout Andrew McCloskey's 100m dash record of 10.66.
Cheynne Ogletree (Garden State Track Club) broke both the women's 800m and 1500m meet records in 2:15.62 and 4:36.26.
The Warriors had nine new entries on their all-time top 10 lists, including Saparito and Boham in the 800, O'Connor and Berry in the high jump and Muhaw in the pole vault.
Senior Lauren Ventrella ran 1:04.52 to rank #8 at ESU in the 400m hurdles, senior Aniyah Williams hit 17-5 1/2 to rank #10 in the long jump, junior Elizabeth Madden moved to #6 in the women's hammer with a mark of 149-6, and sophomore Mike Smith threw 152-3 to rank #8 in the men's hammer.
Smith etched two of ESU's six new PSAC qualifying marks, in the hammer and discus (133-7). He also improved his PSAC mark in the shot put to 47-11 3/4, a PR of almost three feet.
Boham and senior Amr Aldeen (1:57.29) hit PSAC times in the 800, freshman Tim Wilson ran 11.13 in the 100 and sophomore Travis Toth hit the mark in the shot put at 43-3.
Toth was second in the men's hammer at 189-2 two weeks after an NCAA provisional mark of 192-8 at Millersville. He was the top collegiate finisher behind former ESU All-America and current graduate assistant Paul Wagner (197-0). Wagner also won the discus at 157-1.
ESU athletes who improved PSAC qualifying marks were junior Brittany Jones in the 100m (12.56), Ventrella in the 400 hurdles, Muhaw and junior Laura Beimfohr (11-1 3/4) in the pole vault, Williams in the long jump and Madden in the hammer.
For the men, Saparito improved his time in the 800, Parker-Washington ran 10.94 in the 100m and senior Kyle Soden ran a season best in the 100m hurdles (15.17). Berry bettered and freshman Seth Bailey matched his mark in the high jump at 6-6 1/4, and freshman Thomas Freid hit 181-10 in the javelin.
Redshirt senior Josh Hontz, who has DII's seventh-best mark in the javelin at 207-3, was third at 195-1. Sophomore Casey Ciaston was second in the discus (133-7), third in the shot put (44-6 3/4) and fourth in the hammer (153-3).
The Warriors will send athletes to the Penn Relays next weekend (Thursday through Saturday), and head to Lehigh with the rest of the squad on Saturday. There are two weekends left until the PSAC Outdoor Championships at Millersville on May 9-11.
