EAST STROUDSBURG – The East Stroudsburg University men's wrestling team saw a 19-0 lead slip away on Wednesday night at home as Kutztown rallied for a 23-22 dual victory in PSAC action.
ESU (3-8, 2-5 PSAC) won each of the first four bouts against the Golden Bears after starting the match at 165 pounds. The Warriors would take a 21-16 lead in the match following a victory at 141 pounds before Kutztown tallied seven points through the final two bouts to secure the victory.
Freshman
Nick Weikel opened the match for ESU with a 9-1 major decision victory against Connor Rogovich to give the Warriors a 4-0 advantage. Redshirt senior
Mike Raccioppi improved his dual record to 11-0 as he recorded his 11th victory by fall for the Warriors this season after entering the match ranked No. 1 in the latest NWCA DII Individual rankings.
Senior
Elliot Riddick followed Raccioppi with a pin of his own for ESU at 184 pounds. He tallied his sixth victory by fall this season after pinning Anthony Emig in the third period to make it 16-0.
The Warriors continued to build momentum in the match as junior
Sczar Charles notched a 9-7 decision over James Potts at 197 pounds. The dual victory was the second of the season for Charles.
Kutztown would start its rally entering the heavyweight bout as nationally-ranked No. 1 Andrew Dunn Jr. remained undefeated on the season with a 13-5 major decision victory against freshman
Nick Nittoli. The Golden Bears earned six points at 125 pounds via forfeit before Collin Wickramaratna pinned freshman
Bryce Parenti at 133 pounds to trim the deficit to 19-16.
Freshman
Matthew Rosa rallied in the third period to notch a 9-5 decision against Jake Jones and secure three points for the Warriors after trailing for a majority of the bout. The Golden Bears followed with consecutive victories at 149 and 157 pounds to complete the comeback against ESU.
The NCAA Super Region I Tournament will be held on February 29 in Erie on the campus of Mercyhurst University. The 2019 NCAA DII Wrestling Championships will be held in Sioux Falls, South Dakota on March 13-14.
