Bibeau, Macaluso Win Debut; Warriors Fall at No. 9 Gannon, 34-13

Emily Klein, Mia Macaluso and Avia Bibeau picked up victories for ESU

ERIE, Pa. -- Highlighted by wins in their Warrior debut by Mia Macaluso and Avia Bibeau, the East Stroudsburg University women's wrestling team fell to No. 9 Gannon, 34-13, on Sunday afternoon at the Hammerill Center. Macaluso defeated NWCA No. 9 Anya Knappenberger in her first-ever match at ESU.

ESU falls to 4-3 on the season, while the Golden Knights improve to 2-0 in 2021-22.

Notables

  • It was the first match for the Warriors in 49 days, due to the holidays and COVID-19 health and safety precautions.
  • After a forfeit and Gannon pins at 109 and 155 lifted GU to an early 15-0 lead, Emily Klein supplied the Warriors with their first win of the afternoon at 123. Klein improved to 6-4 on the season with a pin at the 4:17 mark in the second period.
  • Macaluso followed Klein and did not disappoint in her collegiate debut. The USA Junior National Champion faced nationally-ranked Anya Knappenberger, who entered the match with a 10-1 record on the season. Macaluso was able to fend off Knappenberger, earning 14-12 decision to add three points to ESU's score.
  • The Golden Knights countered with their third pin and a tech fall at 136 and 143. Gannon led 24-8 through seven matches.
  • At 155, Bibeau, a native of Bushkill, Pa. and a product of East Stroudsburg North, was able to pin her opponent, Gabrielle Malinowski, in 1:40. The fall cut the deficit for ESU to 11 at 24-13.
  • A forfeit win for Gannon at 170 and a pin at 191 sealed a 34-13 win for the Golden Knights.  
  • ESU's Alanna Barberio was able to pin her opponent in an exhibition in just 41 seconds at 116.
