ELMIRA, N.Y. – The East Stroudsburg University men's wrestling team returned to the mat on Wednesday night by defeating Elmira, 46-6, in their season-opening dual inside Speidel Gymnasium.
The Warriors open the year 1-0 for the first time since 2018 while the Soaring Eagles drop to 0-1.
After a pair of non-contests to open the match, senior Jack Dardia earned a 9-2 decision over Blake O'Brein at 141 pounds to put ESU in front, 15-0
Wrestling at 174 pounds, freshman Robert Burke was impressive in his collegiate debut, recording a 9-0 major decision over Hollis Berry to stretch the Warriors' lead to 37-0.
Junior Josh Leidig posted ESU's second straight major decision (20-8) against Bryan Stafford at 184 pounds, and junior Matthew Richardson needed just 2:06 to earn a technical fall (18-0) versus Caleb Tuttle at 197 pounds.
With ESU ahead 46-0, Elmira's Darius Green pinned sophomore Ajay Hiller, who was wrestling up a weight class at 285, in 3:42 to make the final score 46-6 in favor of the Warriors.
ESU picked up forfeit victories at 125 (Ben Makaritis), 133 (Josh Jasionowicz), 149 (Jacob Remolina), 157 (Bryce Parenti) and 165 pounds (Matthew Rosa).
