o EAST STROUDSBURG – In the third annual ESU women's freestyle open, sisters Sofia and Mia Macaluso highlighted the meet for the Warriors with a pair of second-place finishes at 123 and 130 on Sunday at Koehler Fieldhouse.
Notables
- Mia and Sofia each advanced to the finals, where they fell to a pair of nationally-ranked wrestlers from second-ranked King University in the NWCA Coaches Ranks.
- Also placing in the top-six were Shola Cascen (3rd place, 191), Natalie Dunn (4th place, 116), Emily Klein (5th place, 116) and Felicia Smith (6th place, 191).

Madeline Ridge
- Ridge earned a bye in the round of 32, before falling by tech fall by a score of 10-0. She moved to the consolation bracket, picking up her first win at ESU with a pin in 1:34 over Western New England's Alanna Coker. Ridge's day ended against Sacred Heart's Nohea Moniz after getting pinned (2:45).
- After a bye, KaneLong was losing 12-10 in the Round of 16, before pinning Alanna Coker of Western New England at 4:09 to advance to the quarterfinals of 116. WaveryLong fell in the quarterfinals by an 11-0 tech fall to Izabella Frezzo of NJCU. In the consolation bracket, she lost to teammate Dayana Hoyos after a pin at the 1:07 mark.
- Dunn picked up a quick 14-second pin in the round of 16 over Leah Pekar of Tiffin to advance to the quarterfinals. She then faced Tatiana Walker of Sacred Heart and earned a pin to advance to the semifinals. Dunn was not done then, pinning Sacred Heart's Tatiana Walker to become a semifinalist. Dunn fell to Frezzo in the semifinals with a 10-0 tech fall. In the third-place match, Dunn fell to Elmira's Abby Duke by way of a tech fall to wrap up her afternoon in fourth place at 116.
- In her ESU debut, Hoyos fell to eventual third-place finisher, Elmira's Abby Duke, by fall (1:06). She picked up her first Warrior win in the consolation round, with a pin over Adriana Dias of Cedar Crest in 49 seconds. She moved on to the next round with a pin in 1:07 with a pin against teammate Waverly KaneLong. Her afternoon came to a close when she fell to Jade Nguyen of Gannon.
- In the Round of 32, Menes fell to Jade Nguyen of Gannon by a 10-0 tech fall. In her first match of the consolation bracket, she was pinned by Western New England's Alanna Coker.
- After a bye, Klein opened the Round of 16 with a tech fall (10-0) over Bella Serrano of NJCU, before falling to eventual champion Samara Chavez (tech fall, 10-0) of King. Klein battled through the consolation bracket, with the 2021-22 Northeast Region Champion picking up wins against Brooklyn Brown of Brock University (TF, 10-0), Nohea Moniz of Sacred Heart (fall, 1:34) and picked up a win in her final match with a pin against Jade Nguyen to earn fifth place at 116.

Sofia Macaluso
- Macaluso picked up a 10-0 tech fall in just 37 seconds over Hiram's Kenedi Keesey to advance to the quarterfinals. Macaluso then pinned Wyoming Seminary's Virginia Ford at the 2:48 mark to advance to the semifinals. She met Melanie Mendoza of King next, and won by forfeit, leading 9-3. In the finals, she led 4-0 after the first period and 6-4 with 1:07 to go, but King's Vayle Baker would win the tiebreaker after the match ended at 6-6. Mendoza is ranked No. 4 nationally, while Baker is currently ranked at No. 5.
- After a bye, Cancelmo fell to Melanie Mendoza of King by a 10-0 tech fall. She then defeated teammate Janeliz Cotto by a 4-2 decision. She ended her day after being pinned by Wyoming Seminary's Virginia Ford.
- Cotto fell to nationally-ranked Naihomy Henry of NJCU and dropped the 4-2 decision to Carmela Cancelmo in the consolation bracket.
- Amendola picked up her first collegiate win against Natalia Morales who wrestled unattached with a tech fall of 11-0. Amendola bowed out of the championship bracket with an 11-0 tech fall loss to eventual champion, Vayle Baker.

Mia Macaluso
- Macaluso pinned her first opponent, Jayden Bazemore of Gannon in just 37 seconds. She followed that match with a tech fall (10-0, 25 seconds) over Hiram's Bethany Smith. She then advanced to the finals, picking up another 10-0 tech fall over Tiffin's Mackenzie Buck.
- The championship match featured a pair of nationally-ranked wrestlers, with #3 Macaluso faced King's #5 Montana DeLawder. Macaluso picked up the first four points, before DeLawder grabbed her first lead at 6-4. The first period ended with DeLawder leading 6-5. DeLawder would take control in the second period, finishing with an 18-7 tech fall victory in Macaluso's first loss of the season.

Avery Meyers
- Meyers dropped her first match to Sacred Heart's Aliza Leander by a 13-9 decision. Meyers led 7-2 after the first period and held a 9-2 lead early in the second, but Leander recorded the final 11 points in the comeback 13-9 win. She then fell to NJCU's Kayla Zeppetelli in the consolation bracket by a pin at the 2:35 mark.
- Nunez picked up a fall in her first match of the day, pinning Marissa Delacruz of Montreat College at the 2:29 mark. She was forced into the consolation bracket with a loss by forfeit. Nunez was pinned (1:41) in her first consolation match against Maura White, who wrestled unattached.

Zoe Gress
- Gress fell to eventual runner-up Madison Sandquist by a 10-0 tech fall at the 3:40 mark. In consolations, Gresss met Ella Nichols of Western New England by a 8-4 decision.
- McCarthy-Garner dropped her first match as a Warrior after being pinned by Tiffin's Erin Martin at the 1:18 mark. She bowed out of the tournament after being pinned (0:13) by Wyoming Seminary's Love Daley.

- Cascen opened the ESU Open with a quick pin over Western New England's LillyAnn McDorman in 38 seconds. She fell to eventual champion Brianna Fraser of Brock University, after a 10-0 tech fall. In the third-place match, Cascen posted an 11-1 tech fall over Jhanae Douglas to earn a medal.
- Smith dropped her opening match to Sacred Heart's Cara Broadus by a 12-0 tech fall. In consolations, she picked up her first ESU victory with a 10-0 tech fall against Ellie Terranova of Cedar Crest. She then advanced to the fifth-place match, where she was pinned by Kendall McGarity in 20 seconds.
