MILLERSVILLE – After tying the game at 6-6 in their final at-bats, Millersville went on to defeat the East Stroudsburg University baseball team in 10 innings by a final score of 7-6 in PSAC East action on Friday afternoon at Cooper Park.
The Warriors fall to 21-7 overall and 5-3 in the conference while the Marauders extend their winning streak to 12 games and move to 21-5 on the season and 7-0 in the PSAC.
Trailing 2-0 after the first three innings, Jeremy Piatkiewicz tied the game at 2-2 in the top of the fourth on a two-out single up the middle. In their next at-bats, ESU went ahead as Anthony Torreullas crushed a two-run blast over the left field fence to give the Warriors a 4-2 lead.
After the Marauders got back within a run, Jack Rothenhausler delivered his second career home run in the top of the seventh to extend ESU's advantage to 6-3.
In their final at-bats, Millersville took advantage of two hits and two walks to plate three runs which evened the game at 6-6. Then in the bottom of the 10th, the Marauders worked a two-walked before stealing second and ultimately coming around to score on a double to left center.
Brock Kauffman finished the day 3-for-5 with two runs scored while CJ Peechatka (2-for-5) and Piatkiewicz (2-for-5, two RBI) each collected a pair of hits. Rothenhausler added two RBI and two runs.
Chase Nowak (3-0) was handed the no-decision after firing 7.0 innings, allowing three unearned runs on five hits to go with five strikeouts.
In 2.2 innings of relief, the Warriors bullpen yielded four runs on four hits as well as five walks.
Notables
- Torreullas home run in the top of the fifth was the 17th of his career to move into a tie for seventh in program history
- Kauffman sits at 141 career RBI which is six shy of setting the school record initially held by Chris Knott with 146
- Rojas moved into second all-time with 107 career walks which is three away from breaking the program record set by Ian Allen (109). Rojas also remained ranked eighth all-time in career runs with 136.
- Ben Piripavel collected his PSAC leading 19th steal of the year to raise the ESU's season total to 74 which ranks 10th in all of NCAA DII
How it Happened
In the bottom of the third inning, Millersville took advantage of an ESU error and used a pair of hits to grab a 2-0 lead. Sam Morris reached on the Warriors' blunder and Jimmy Losh followed with a single to left field. After a sacrifice bunt moved both runners into scoring position, Thomas Caufield drove in the pair on a base hit to right field.
The Warriors answered in the top of the fourth inning, as a timely two-out base hit from Piatkiewicz scored a pair to tie the game at 2-2. Kauffman collected his second hit of the game and Rothenhausler walked to put two runners aboard. After Tim Haverstick was hit by a pitch with two outs to load the bases, Piatkiewicz singled up the middle to even the score.
Following a Millersville pitching changein the top of the fifth inning, ESU grabbed their first lead of the game as Torreullas lifted a two-run home run over the left field fence to put the Warriors ahead 2-0. Piripavel led of the frame with a single up the middle to set up before coming around to score.
The Marauders got another unearned run back in the home half of the sixth inning as Cole Houser singled to right field with two outs to make the score 4-3. Keegan Soltis crossed home plate after reaching on an ESU throwing error to begin the frame.
Rothenhausler helped the Warriors regain a three-run edge at 6-3 in the top of the seventh inning has he sent a two-run blast over the left field fence. Kauffman set up the freshman after leading off with a single.
In the bottom of the ninth inning, Millersville used two hits and two walks to even the game at 6-6. Keegan Soltis doubled home a pair to make the score 6-5 and with the bases loaded, Cole Houser grounded into a fielder's choice to push home the tying run.
After the Warriors failed to take advantage of a leadoff double in the top of the 10th, the Marauders worked a two-out walk and singled home the game-winning run in the home of half of the inning.
